The Voice Recap: Wide Open Races

We’re four episodes in to The Voice‘s eleventh season, and there’s still no obvious favorite being prematurely foisted on us by producers like an unwelcome Christmas display popping up at the mall in late September. (Oh, Macy’s, I really didn’t need to explain to my kids today that it’ll be another three months before they see their Power Rangers action-figure collection fully completed.)

We never considered Miley Cyrus and Billy Idol a match made in musical heaven, but the duo sure proved us wrong when they delivered a rousing performance of Idol's 1983 hit "Rebel Yell" at the iHeartRadio Music Festival on Sept. 23. The Crisis in Six Scenes star - who's also one of The Voice's newest judges - surprised everyone when she strutted out on stage in an all-leather ensemble and belted out the second verse with the punk rocker. Maybe the next time they duet, Cyrus can get him to sing some Justin Bieber instead? How A-List Talent Changed the Face of Reality TV

23 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Fourteen years ago, the world was introduced to an unfamiliar host on a new reality show: Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol.”

Today, “American Idol” has sung its last tune and Seacrest is a global phenomenon. But in 2016, would he have even gotten his shot at fame?

In the highly competitive era of peak TV, the Big Four are taking fewer risks on unknown talent when it comes to unscripted programming, placing all their bets on A-listers.

The reality show lineup of the 2016-17 season is a who’s-who of superstars. Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking over you-know-who’s seat on “The New Celebrity Apprentice”; Alec Baldwin is hosting “Match Game”; Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys are spinning around in “The Voice’s” red chairs; Michael Strahan is hosting “$100,000 Pyramid”; Simon Cowell returned to the States with “America’s Got Talent”; and Steve Harvey is the face of three series with two more on the way.

Someone get Merriam-Webster on the phone, because Dancing With the Stars redefined the word “filler” on Tuesday night.

Rather than use the special-night broadcast to showcase more new dance routines, the ABC series instead stretched its first elimination of the season across two unnecessary hours. (Not even American Idol was this self-indulgent! Er, at least not most of the time.)

‘The Voice’ Premiere Recap: Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys Make Debut as Coaches

19 September 2016 7:43 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When one hears that Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys are joining “The Voice” as coaches in Season 11, it’s difficult to not have flashbacks to when “American Idol” welcomed Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey for its twelfth season — a chemistry experiment that, without getting into too many details, exploded.

More than that, in unscripted television, having two women on a judging panel (let alone in the same room) is traditionally a setup for a cat fight. Showdowns between Tyra Banks and Janice DickinsonBritney Spears and Demi Lovato; even “The Voice” has made headlines and become tabloid fodder for conflict between two female judges who haven’t even appeared on the same season.

But during the first night of the two-night premiere, Cyrus and Keys brought class, professionalism, insight and personality. The two women joined the show’s “winningest coaches” — which really means the only two judges who have stayed on the show since the first season »
