A would-be silent horror film with a twist in the tale
9 February 2017 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

THE MYSTERY OF DEAD MAN'S ISLE looks and sounds like an early silent horror film but in reality it's a crime thriller. The story is about a guy who encounters a young and distressed woman on an otherwise deserted island. She claims to have been shipwrecked and warns him of a terrible danger should he choose to stay.

So far so straightforward, but the most surprising thing about this short film is that it becomes an action-packed thriller dealing with counterfeiters and their battle against the secret service. Okay, so the amount the guns smoke in this film is a little ridiculous, but otherwise it's surprisingly well-paced and exciting for its era.
