Merry Christmas, gentle readers! Today is a day for spending time with loved ones, yelling at those loved ones, giving them gifts, refilling their drinks. It's also a day for popping in a DVD in the living room while working through a food coma. What will it be? The list of movies that have explored this eggnog-drenched holiday is nearly as long as Santa's own. Now action, now rom-com, now satire and thriller!

With some strong 'nog in hand, we took a look back at some of the very best and very worst a big screen Noel has to offer and plucked out our favorite elements from each. Gather the family round the computer screen and take in MTV News' Christmas Movie Awards.

'Elf': Buddy's top 5 passive-aggressive moments

25 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

He doesn't mean it! He's just an elf! Here are my five favorite Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) moments that would be considered totally passive-aggressive in real life coming from anybody but him (and maybe Bob Newhart). Elf airs twice tonight on USA, starting at 8 Et. 5. [Presses all the elevator buttons because they're so "beautiful."] To fellow rider: "Looks like a Christmas tree!" 4. To the Ed Asner-wannabe store Santa: "You smell like beef and cheese. You don't smell like Santa." (To be fair, he really was angry here.) 3. To coffee shop employees, after reading a sign in the window: "You did it! Congratulations! World's best cup of coffee! »

Will Ferrell makes like Chazz Reinhold and crashes wedding photo

21 December 2009 9:47 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In case you didn't know, Will Ferrell is kind of a big deal. That must be why he's gracing my television screen nearly every day this holiday season (thanks to numerous Elf showings) and my New York Times. If you checked out yesterday's Times, you might have been just a bit confused to see a wedding announcement paired with a photo of a smiling couple -- and someone who appeared to be photobombing the pic. No, it wasn't crasher squirrel. It was Will Ferrell himself, who decided to appear in the portrait of the couple, who are both production assistants. »

Dan O'Bannon, Chris Henry And Actresses Who Play Wii In Today's Twitter-Wood

18 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

This was a rough week for memorial tweets, with Tisha Taylor Murphy and Roy Disney's passings both making headlines. More condolences showed up today for "Alien" screenwriter Dan O'Bannon and Bengals wide received Chris Henry, who both had their share of fans in our feed.

Following up on Jason Reitman's Olympic Torch tweets from the week, posted a much better photo today and got some moral support from Roger Ebert. You can check that out below, along with a shot of "New Moon" actor Alex Meraz's new t-shirt, two actresses who are not ashamed of their Wiis. It's all retweeted in the Twitter-Wood report for December 18, 2009.

Elf Set To Bring Christmas To Broadway

17 December 2009 4:02 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A stage adaptation of Will Ferrell's 2003 Christmas movie Elf is set to bring festive cheer to Broadway.

Producers are planning a big budget musical version for the New York stage with the songwriters behind Drew Barrymore's 1998 movie The Wedding Singer.

The show, which tells the story of a normal-size man who is raised by elves in the North Pole and comes to New York in search of his real father, is expected to hit Broadway next Christmas, according to the New York Post. »

Christmas classic, Elf to become Broadway musical?

17 December 2009 3:03 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Even those afflicted with Scrooge-itus or morph into the Grinch come Christmas can’t deny the festive charms of Elf. The 2003 comedy starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, a man raised by elves at the North Pole who journeys to New York to meet his very human and very grumpy father, Walter (James Caan) is a funny and silly seasonal confection for all ages. And now it looks like Buddy will get the chance to bring his chirpy Christmas motto that “the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear,” as a musical version of the movie is being penciled in to hit Broadway next year. »

Missed Christmas movies: Disney’s ‘One Magic Christmas’

14 December 2009 9:09 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Like most of the planet (or at least the 12 people I’ve talked to), I count National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as one of the best (and certainly funniest) Christmas movies in cinema history. I also greatly enjoy Home Alone, Elf, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Santa Clause and Noel (yes, Noel.  I know, Paul Walker lacks a little, um, well, acting talent, but it’s still a good movie).  And right up there with my favorite December 25th-themed flicks is Disney’s One Magic Christmas starring Harry Dean Stanton and Mary Steenburgen and released in 1985.  Sadly I feel this movie has been left in the dust in popularity, but it is not a film to forget.  It’s family-friendly (for kids 10 and up) and possesses depth and heart-felt emotion.

The story revolves around a woman named Ginny Grainger (Steenburgen) who seems to lack all joy in life.  Her love for her husband, »

The Alamo Guide

for December 10th, 2009 If you’re at the S. Lamar theater this weekend, and you see a bunch of groggy ass, smelly, crazy-looking people wandering out of the theater around noon on Sunday, don’t worry. They won’t hurt you, they will have just sat through a full 24 hours plus of movies and they’ll be in desperate need of sleep. I’ll be one of them. It’ll be awesomely exhausting! Aside from that, if you got tickets already (if not, toooo bad), you can see the folks from Broken Lizard with their newest film The Slammin’ Salmon, but the most important thing that you should do is Go See Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans!!! Yes, the name is long, and the trailer makes it look kind of silly, but the hype over at Alamo Headquarters is ridiculous and the few people in »

Decade in Review: 2003 Top Ten

8 December 2009 6:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

Special Mentions: The Cremaster Cycle and Angels in America

Most Underappreciated: Hulk (Ang Lee), In the Cut (Jane Campion), Anything Else (Woody Allen), Charlies Angels: Full Throttle (McG) and »

Zooey Deschanel as 'Barbarella? Check This Out ...

7 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

You've seen Zooey Deschanel as a blonde before, most memorably for the modern holiday classic Elf, but you still might not recognize her in this new print ad for Absolut Vodka. In fact, she looks kind of like Hilary Duff as the sci-fi go-go girl promoting an Absolut-brand cosmopolitan. Regardless of who she resembles, though, the ad puts it into my head that Deschanel might be perfect for that remake of Barbarella -- if currently attached director Robert Luketic doesn't go with regular collaborator Kate Bosworth. In general, I'm reminded that everyone's favorite Mpdg (manic pixie dream girl) needs to do more science fiction, even if she seemed all wrong for her Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy role and even if she need never work for M. Night Shyamalan again.

Deschanel's single Absolut ad is part of a campaign that also sees Kate Beckinsale in three different spots, including one »

Ho, Ho, Whoa!: The 5 Worst Movie Santas

7 December 2009 2:24 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's the happiest time of the year ... once again. Rather than dole out the standard list of the best holiday classics to warm your heart, we prefer to shake things up a bit with our look at everyone's favorite bearded fat man, Santa Claus.

Now we all know that Edmund Gwenn was a wonderful Santa in Miracle on 34th Street, the only actor to take home an Oscar as St. Nick. And actors such as Ed Asner in Elf and David Huddleston in Santa Claus: The Movie have certainly done the red suit justice on the silver screen.

But what about those other Santas? The ones that took the legend of Santa in a different direction: Boozing, scaring, kicking, and even killing? Those are the ones we take a look at in Ho, Ho, Whoa!: The 5 Worst Movie Santas.

'Supernatural' Looking for a Cupid

4 December 2009 7:48 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Supernatural" is preparing one very sweet Valentine's Day episode by casting a Cupid. Casting call has been released to find a man in his 30s or 40s to play the role of "doughy, out of shape, naked" angel of matchmaking.

They want to portray the Cupid as a humorously loving character who "greets everyone with enormous bear hugs that almost break their ribs." He is required to be "overflowing with love and positivity to an almost humorous and narcotic degree". To provide more insight of what kind of person they want, the casting directors specifically wanted someone like Will Ferrell in "Elf".

Cupid will be a guest star in the episode called "My Bloody Valentine". Beside Cupid, the episode also requires an actor for Famine. He is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who is withered, weak, raspy. This character is a creepy and destructive old man filled with a voracious hunger. »

‘Iron Man 2′ Trailer in December?

23 November 2009 11:36 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Since photography wrapped on July 18, director Jon Favreau has been tweeting his progress while editing Iron Man 2.  He rarely reveals details about the actual movie, but for anyone on Twitter Favreau’s tweets are exciting little updates about how the visual effects are coming together for the May 2010 release.

When he’s not participating in trending topics, Favreau also interacts with his fans, retweeting Iron Man-related pictures or comments or thanks for his other movies like Elf.  Then Thursday this re-tweet:

Rt @Ann_Howard: @Jon_Favreau Please tell us the trailer is coming soon – w/Sherlock Holmes, perhaps??

It seems like the logical spot.  Paramount could be looking to other studio’s major releases since they have no blockbusters scheduled for this holiday season (it is distributing Oscar-bound Up in the Air).  Sherlock Holmes fits the Iron Man demographic and it’s the clear favorite to top the »

Will Ferrell Is The Most Overpaid Stars As Per Forbes Magazine

22 November 2009 2:55 AM, PST | Gossipvita | See recent Gossipvita news »

The 'Elf' actor and comedian topped the annual list by Forbes magazine, which calculated how much moviemakers earn per dollar paid to their lead actor.

After the last couple of funnyman Will's films - 'Semi-Pro' and 'Land of the Lost' - bombed at the box office, his rate of return has dropped to $3.29 for every dollar of Will's fee. This contrasts greatly with the other end of the scale, which saw Shia Labeouf named as the Best Actor for the Buck in August, earning studios an average of $160 for every dollar he was paid. Behind Will on the Most Overpaid list was British actor Ewan McGregor, while Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson all made the top ten. However, Will could turn his box office figures around as he recently revealed he wants to make a sequel to 'Anchorman', one of his most successful films to date, »

Will Ferrell tops Hollywood's most overpaid list

20 November 2009 5:19 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The star of Elf and Anchorman zooms up from No 9 last year in the Forbes annual list on account of the box-office disappointment of this summer's Land of the Lost

A year is a long time in Hollywood. This time 12 months ago, Will Ferrell was sitting pretty as one of America's most bankable comic actors, renowned for his pitch-perfect impression of George W Bush. Today there is a new man in the White House and Ferrell has just been named as the industry's most overpaid star.

Ferrell, 42, topped the Forbes annual list of overpaid Hollywood actors, shooting up from No 9 in last year's rankings largely on account of his flop film Land of the Lost, which failed to recoup its $100m (£60m) budget.

Britain's Ewan McGregor finished in second place. His latest film, Amelia, has so far earned just $13.3m from a budget of $40m.

Listen: This American Life Segment that Inspired Santa Wars, Movie to be Written by Mike White

19 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Paramount Pictures has hired School of Rock screenwriter Mike White to script Santa Wars, a comedy based on the true story which appeared on This American Life in December 2008. The story, written by Joshuah Bearman, told of two rival factions that developed within a union of professional Santa Clauses, which resulted in a "Santa Claus civil war." White is best when put in the dark comedy arena, and this might be a perfect fit. This story is definitely more akin to Bad Santa than Elf. White's previous credits include Dead Man on Campus, Chuck & Buck, Freaks and Geeks, and The Good Girl. More recently, he's had a turn in more family-friendly territory with School of Rock and Nacho Libre, before making his directorial debut Year of the Dog. After the jump you can find more information about the original story that has inspired this feature film, and even listen to »
