Christmas is a time for tradition – presents, decorations, carols, and mince pies. But what better tradition to celebrate than the Christmas movie? Join The Hollywood News for the Movie Advent Calendar – a film each day ’til Christmas. For the full Advent Calendar so far, click here.
Few directors can divide an audience like Tim Burton. There are those who’ll lap up his every film, buy the t-shirt and play with the action figure. Then there are those who adamantly dislike his levels of quirk and Helena Bonham Carter. As such, there are swarms of film fans who don’t like A Nightmare Before Christmas. Though the film was not actually directed by Burton (a fact that can probably win a few bets), his oddball fingerprints are smudged over every frame.
To ruin the opening schpiel a little, I’m fairly ambivalent towards Burton. Though I have very little time »

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's safe to say that Steve Buscemi is one of the most universally liked actors of this generation. He vivified Fargo, gave Ghost World a soul, lent Big Fish some quirky sincerity, ruled on 30 Rock (and Boardwalk Empire, I suppose), and even proved himself a viable proxy for Paul Lynde as the voice of Templeton in the Charlotte's Web remake. That's not an easy sneer to fill. But today we're talking about Buscemi's underrated work, the stuff that doesn't percolate with the grim vigor of a Coen Brothers classic. What's your pick? »

Marion Cotillard has become that rarest of things, the heavily-accented superstar. While she'd cropped up in Hollywood fare like "Big Fish" and "A Good Year" before, her Oscar victory in 2008 for Edith Piaf biopic "La Vie En Rose" catapulted her onto the A-list, and since then she's mixed blockbuster fare like "Public Enemies," "Contagion" and "Inception" with smaller home-grown projects like "Little White Lies" and "The Last Flight," while somehow finding time to have her first child with partner Guillaume Canet a few months back. Next year sees examples at both ends of the scale, with a part, still shrouded in mystery, in "The Dark Knight Rises" and a dark, gruelling role in Jacques Audiard's "Rust & Bone," but at Warner Bros., where she's become something of a favorite of late, are now courting her for a return to tentpole territory, as Vulture report that »

Amazon.com's movie studio promised to throw the development process open to the masses. One year on, how has the crowdsourced screenplay caught on?
There is something wrong with modern Hollywood – we can agree on that. Too many remakes and sequels and prequels; far too many computer game and toy adaptations. Everyone thinks the profit-focused, top-down system is too busy chasing "pre-branded content" to find new talent, and too risk-averse to take a chance on original stories. Industry insiders complain as much as moviegoers, but viable alternatives are thin on the ground. Until a year ago.
In November last year, Amazon.com, the online book merchants turned internet visionaries, announced the launch of a new kind of movie studio. Their idea was to throw open the gates to all comers, regardless of geographic location, industry connections or – some would say – talent. The goal, according to their own website is: "To »

Tim Burton is circling an adaptation of Ransom Riggs' novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. According to Deadline, Burton is in talks with 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertaniment to develop the book into a directing vehicle, and he would set the screenwriter. The story involves a teenager who finds the old orphanage his grandfather used to tell him about, but discovers that its unusual residents may have been more dangerous than he was led to believe. It's a story that sounds a little like Big Fish until you thrown in the "dangerous kids" aspect. At that point, you have Burton doing another horror movie (unless the kids are just "misunderstood", in which case, booo). Hit the jump for a synopsis of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children as well as a recap of Burton's other potential projects. Burton's next movie, an adaptation of the 60s cult horror TV series Dark Shadows, »

Tim Burton always has a few possible directorial efforts brewing, and the latest looks to be Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, a novel by Ransom Riggs that was published this past summer and snapped up by Fox and Chernin Entertainment for development as a movie. Tim Burton is now in talks to spearhead that development, and is looking at the story of an old orphanage and its strange and possibly dangerous residents who may still be lurking in the ruins as a possible film to direct. The book blends a story of the orphanage and the unusual children who dwell there with vintage photographs illustrating the inhabitants. A quick look at the synopsis below will make clear why this seems like obvious Burton material -- there are strains of Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and other films from the director, as well as hints of his own particular blend »

Billy Crudup, 43, is one of those actors in Hollywood that plays it low key, yet everyone is always wanting to know who he's shacking up with. Can we really be blamed? This is the guy that dumped Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker mid-pregnancy in 2003 to get with Claire Danes. Parker was only two months shy on giving birth to their first child.
Well, now it looks like he's found a new love interest in Grace Gummer. Other wise known as Meryl Streep's daughter.
The 25 year old actress and Billy were seen together at an after-party for "The Rampart" at the Mondrian Soho Hotel Tuesday night. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Gigantic TeenNick and Big Fish actors were "physically open about their relationship" and were seen holding hands and rubbing each other's backs.
The two met when they both starred in Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" on Broadway as love interests. »

Audra McDonald rehearsing for "Porgy & Bess"Theater geeks who read The Film Experience (there be crossover!) might have been wondering what happened to the stage door column. The truth is we just haven't been seeing much. This is never a question of "nothing to see" but always a matter of finances and for one quarter of each year the the not-so-small matter of Oscar Mania keeping us busy with pre-recorded actors instead of live ones. But when I'm not seeing it I enjoy it vicariously through avid theatergoing friends and through blogs. My favorite is The Broadway Blog so if you're into theater, check it out. Here's four quick film / theater crossover tidbits I wanted to share.
Audra in Rampart
I practically shrieked with surprised delight when Broadway baby Audra McDonald showed up in Oren Moverman's Rampart. She just kills her one scene role as Woody Harrelson's latest conquest. »

Internet genius Kees Van Dijkhuizen (please don't ask me how to pronounce that) has been doing these [the films of] mash-ups for a while now. I am addicted. I watch them all the time. Now, he's put up his latest- [The Films Of] Tim Burton.
I totally forgot that Burton did both Big Fish and Planet of Apes.
I was just having a conversation the other day with a gentleman friend about Tim Burton. Burton is talented but I would never, ever go out of my way to watch a Tim Burton film. Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood- all great movies but would you ever consciously sit down and do a Tim Burton marathon? If you say yes, I would be concerned over your mental health.
What do you think?
