Tim plans to spend his 21st birthday at his Scottish estate with eight of his closest friends. Amongst the excitement of rediscovering old friendships, no one minds that a snowstorm has cut them off from the rest of the outside world. Everything is set for the perfect weekend, until one of the guests stumbles across an old history of the house with the power to unleash the horrors of Scotland's past. The book tells of Murray, the old Scot patriot, who has had his eyes torn out and his house taken away during the English invasion. Intent on exacting bloody revenge on the reunited English friends Murray possesses the body of a guest and turns him into a murderer. He seems impossible to stop as when the possessed guest is killed, Murray passes into the killer to continue his mission of murdering all nine of them. During a snowstorm, dimpled David Nicolle (as Pete MacGregor) drives to an old Scottish mansion. Just before the credits, we see his romantic interest, dark-haired Amelia Warner (as Laura), in a desperate moment. She is running around with a bloody knife; this is from a scene appearing later...
Back to the present, nine friends settle in for the 21st birthday party given by their celebrated host, Patrick Kennedy (as Tim). He is Mr. Nicolle's former college roommate. Other friends from school include pre-med student Ben Peyton (as Andy) and spectacled James Schlesinger (as Damien). In case you're wondering, Mr. Schlesinger wears contact lenses in the early scenes and puts on his glasses when he gets ready for bed. Long-haired Vivienne Harvey (as Lucy) is there, with beautiful blonde ex-roommate Rosie Fellner (as Emma) and American sexpot Paris Hilton (as Jo)...
Although Ms. Hilton is heralded as the "star" of this film, she is one of the least important characters and does not take up very much screen time. Her boyfriend, blond bearded Lex Shrapnel (as Tom), gets the party started when he spies a ghastly image in the bathroom mirror. Yes, the house turns out to be haunted. Proving herself to be the smartest knife in the drawer, Ms. Warner figures things out quicker than most. There is nothing extraordinary about "Nine Lives", but Nicolle and Warner are likable in the leading roles and director Andrew Green works well with the cast and setting. He is especially good with photographer Robin Vidgeon on shadowy stairways, particularly when they follow "Pete" and "Damien" around the house.
