The 50 Best Sci-Fi Films of the 21st Century Thus Far

19 July 2016 10:56 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In a medium founded on expanding one’s imagination and perception of reality, no genre does it better than science fiction. We’ve come a long way from the days when Georges Méliès took us to the moon, for today’s filmmakers look far beyond our universe and into the deepest corners of our soul to reflect the current society.

With the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise arriving in theaters this week, we’ve set out to reflect on the millennium’s sci-fi films that have most excelled. To note: we only stuck with feature-length works of 60 minutes or longer and, to make room for a few more titles, our definition of “the 21st century” stretched to include 2000.

Check out our top 50 below and let us know your favorites in the comments. We’ve also put the list on Letterboxd to keep track of how many you’ve seen. »

Horror Highlights: Split Lip Kickstarter, Doctor Strange Sdcc 2016 Pop! Vinyl, Living With The Dead

20 June 2016 8:35 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his online horror anthology Split Lip, Sam Costello has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a hardcover collection featuring 13 of the best and creepiest Split Lip stories. We also have images and details on Funko’s third wave of Sdcc 2016 exclusives—including a Doctor Strange Pop! vinyl figure—as well as preview pages from Dark Horse’s trade paperback release of the comic book series Living with the Dead.

Split Lip Kickstarter: From Kickstarter: “Split Lip is an anthology of self-contained horror comics written by Sam Costello and drawn by artists from all over the world. It is often compared to The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. Influences include writers like Shirley Jackson and Clive Barker, comics creators like Junji Ito and Emily Carroll, ghost stories, folk tales and murder ballads.

Calling Split Lip horror is easiest, but it’s more accurate to call it weird fiction. »

[SXSW Review] Everybody Wants Some!!

14 March 2016 9:03 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Near the end of his essay for the Criterion release of Dazed and Confused, Kent Jones writes, “[Richard] Linklater has a keen, poetic memory for exactly how we did nothing.” Like the best American directors, Linklater understands that the roots of Americana are in a formless wandering, one that was as often about bullshit as transcendence.

It’s a weekend bacchanalia filled with rule-breaking parties, masculinity endurance tests, hotboxed bedrooms, closed-door hookups, and the flickers of a romance that could be about more than getting off.

Echoing the platonically ’70s ripples of “Sweet Emotion” in its predecessor, Everybody Wants Some!! opens with the stomping snares of “My Sharona.” It’s the dawn of a new era as the easy-going, sneakily joyful »
