The last good show on Nickelodeon as of now.
16 July 2006 | by (no need to know) – See all my reviews

In 2004, I decided that I've had it with Nickelodeon, so I semi-retired from watching it. The reason? It's because ever since we entered in the 21st century in 2000, Nick has mostly been releasing mediocre shows (Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron, most of the Teenick shows, etc.)and a couple very bad shows (Butt-Ugly Martians, Chalkzone, and the extremely short-lived Action League Now). Once in a blue moon, however, a new decent or good show appears, such as Fairly Oddparents and Invader Zim (I never loved the show, but it's better then some of the crap Nick watchers get today. Shame on Nick for canceling it early!). I personally thought "My Life as a Teenage Robot", or MLAATR, was a pretty enjoyable show when I first saw it in 2003.

The story involves a robot created by Dr. Wakeman to save the world from disaster (yes, this concept has been used several times before), but the robot has a female teenage personality. So, the robot's codename is XJ9, but the robot prefers the name "Jenny". She's willing to keep the world safe, but she also wants to have a normal teenage life at high-school and with friends. This is where she meets Brad and Tuck, two brothers that live near Jenny's place. Brad is a human in High School, while Tuck is more around 2nd grade. Brad acts cool while Tuck is cruel with his immature behavior. But hey, that's how brothers are. They both eventually get along with Jenny just fine. Later on in the series, Jenny meets more friends (such as Sheldon), and some rivals (Brit and Tiff, AKA Krust Cousins), and enemies that interrupt her daily life. And that's the basic plot.

When it comes to characters as I mentioned above, they all have a purpose and they are mostly likable, except for Brit and Tiff. Some of the episodes I've seen through the entire series were pretty enjoyable. They're usually filled with humor and action. The humor is sometimes a little childish, but it can sometimes be very appealing to everyone. The plot line seems to capture interests as well.

The animation style is pretty unique. It combines the old-school style of animated looks from the 1930's, but makes them fresh and appealing with colorful technology we have today. The designs are always appealing. Same can be said about the audio. The music isn't too memorable, but it does get the job done with happy catchy music for the normal scenes, and trance music for the fighting scenes. The voice acting is also very good, and a couple voices may sound familiar to cartoon fanatics.

I haven't seen this show ever since I gave up on Nick in 2004. From time to time, I check on Nick to see what they do these days. As of this writing in 2006, they haven't changed too much, there are a couple new shows, but they don't look special (And the upcoming Mr. Meaty looks terrible and retarded). Unfortunately, when I check the channel, it looks like Nickelodeon canceled MLAATR or something. I'm somewhat disappointed. Nick always seems to cancel some of the good shows too early.

MLAATR may not have the same appeal like the great Nicktoons of the 90's (Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, old Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Catdog, etc.), and there are a couple aspects of the overall show that I don't really appreciate, this was still an enjoyable show that I liked and it's better then many of the Nickelodeon shows aired today. I hope it gets a good DVD release someday.
