A top joint-production blockbuster helmed by Wai Kar Fai and starring top talents from Hongkong, Singapore and China, this story tells of the differing fates of two twin brothers with very different looks and personalities. Filmed in Shanghai and Singapore, this story stars Hongkong's Jordan Chan, Singapore's Fann Wong and Christopher Lee, and mainland Chinese star newcomers Huang Yi and Hao Lei. Written by
This serial, a China-Singapore collaboration, is distinctly divided into two parts - the China scenes and the Singapore scenes. Though the line is blurred often by the mix of characters within the story, the serial never really blends the two distinct cultures together, instead preferring to keep them distant for the sake of cultural and social comparison.
The stars of the show are Jordan Chan and Chinese newcomer Huang Yi - with their solid, focused acting. Christopher Lee successfully makes everyone hate him because of his irritating character. One would expect Fann Wong to have enjoyed a meatier role than this one, so it is disappointing to see that she shows less of a breakthrough in this serial. However, considering that mainland Chinese viewers have yet to see her in many roles other than her period gongfu roles, and that in this serial, she introduces herself on her own terms and is so natural and uncontrived, she is a joy to watch. The fact that almost every other character in the show is dramatic and even more dramatic makes her understated, subtle and graceful performance a joy to watch.
The dramatic serial is a formulaic, plot-based serial that moves with all the requisite highs and lows of turbulent social periods in China and Singapore. It moves like the turbulent Hongkong-style serials that Wai Kar Fai is competent in churning out. However, the main target of the show is TV viewers in mainland China.
