Star Trek Beyond opens to $89 million worldwide

25 July 2016 4:53 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As Star Trek celebrates its 50th anniversary, Paramount Pictures has unleashed the third instalment of its rebooted series – and the thirteenth movie overall – with the Justin Lin-directed Star Trek Beyond enjoying a worldwide opening haul of $89.3 million.

Domestically, Beyond topped the chart with $59.3 million, which is down on the previous two instalments, with 2009’s Star Trek debuting to $75.2 million and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness opening with $70.2 million.

Beyond cost $185 million, so should go on to turn a small profit for the studio, which will surely be a relief for Paramount given they have already announced a fourth movie, which will see Chris Hemsworth reprising the role of George Kirk.

J.J. Abrams says Star Trek 4 is his “favourite Star Trek story that we’ve had”

Star Trek Beyond may have just opened in cinemas [read our reviews here and here], but producer J.J. Abrams is already talking up the next instalment, which Paramount officially announced last week.

Star Trek 4 will see Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk coming face-to-face with his father George Kirk, with Chris Pine reprising his role from the 2009 reboot, and Abrams has told EW that the plot for the fourth movie is his “favourite Star Trek story that we’ve had.”

“One of the reasons that I’m hoping [Star Trek Beyond] does well is so that we can, without question, get that movie made. It really is an amazing story. It’s really the reason we made the deal with Chris Hemsworth as soon as we could because we really wanted that story to be told, so fingers crossed.”

Last month, young actor Anton Yelchin tragically lost his life in a freak automobile accident, and now producer J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Yelchin won’t be replaced in the role of Chekov for the fourth Star Trek film, which was just announced yesterday.

““I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better,” Abrams told Postmedia Network, before revealing that discussions are ongoing with screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as to how they will deal with the loss of Yelchin within the script.

Star Trek Beyond is set to open in cinemas this Friday, July 22nd, with Yelchin joined in the cast b Chris Pine as James Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoë Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones and John Cho as Sulu alongside new additions Idris Elba »

J.J. Abrams reveals that Chris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk in Star Trek 4

16 July 2016 7:31 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in May it was announced that Paramount has already started development on a fourth entry in its relaunched Star Trek franchise, despite the fact we’re still a few days away from the release of the latest chapter, Star Trek Beyond.

Naturally, there are very few details available on Star Trek 4 at present; Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are said to be locked in for a return, and according to Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood, it seems we can add another name to that cast.

Mantz is reporting on Twitter that J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his role as George Kirk, the father of Pine’s James T. Kirk, having portrayed the character in the opening scenes of Abrams’ 2009 reboot.

Update: Star Trek Beyond’s Sulu is gay as nod to George Takei, George Takei says decision is “unfortunate”

8 July 2016 5:50 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Ahead of its release later this month, actor John Cho has revealed that Star Trek Beyond will casually reveal that Hikaru Sulu is in a same-sex relationship, in a nod to original Star Trek star George Takei.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it,” Cho tells Herald Sun, “Which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

However, it seems that Takei himself isn’t overly impressed by the decision to make Sulu gay, describing it as “unfortunate” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character,” states Takei. “Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

Takei said that he instead urged the filmmakers to create an original gay character, adding that:

Watch: Star Trek Beyond trailer recut with Peter Gabriel ‘Sledgehammer’; it’s much better than Rihanna’s

2 July 2016 4:49 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Flickering Myth’s Oli Davis boldly goes where no Star Trek Beyond trailer has gone before…

“Wanna sign my Dredd petition?”

Star Trek Beyond’s most recent trailer debuted pop star Rihanna’s latest single, Sledgehammer.  It’s a rather clunky collaboration. Rihanna, an icon of aloof coolness and overt sexiness… and the Star Trek franchise – one of the most mocked pieces of geekdom for the last half century.

And while watching that trailer, with Rihanna space ballading about tears and stuff, I remembered another, much better song with the same name: ex-Genesis musician Peter Gabriel’s 1986 single Sledgehammer. Turns out it fits the teaser perfectly.

Move aside, RiRi.
