At one point Sonic Team had plans for a sequel, which would have been released on a more powerful game console. One of the ideas for the sequel involved the location background being completely flammable and burning away entirely if the player took too long to complete a stage. The early death of the Sega Saturn led to poor sales of the game, however, and the sequel was never developed further.
A two-player mode was planned for this game. Production screenshots revealed that two-player action likely would have taken place in the training facility and the players would have been combating one another instead of playing cooperatively. However, during tests the two-player mode kept crashing, so it was removed as the developers couldn't afford to delay the release of the game. Despite its removal, the voice clips recorded for the two player mode were left in and can be heard in the game's unlockable sound test.
All of the Rangers have a number assigned to them. Chris Partn, the leader of the Rangers, wears a 1, Lead Phoenix has a 3, Big Landman is 5, Tillis is 6, Shou is 7 and Iria Klein is 8. It is never revealed or otherwise explained why the number 2 isn't used, but 4 likely wasn't used because the game was originally Japanese, and the Japanese kanji for 4 also means "death".
In the title song, they mention Wes Craven, but sing it 'Wes Craves'.
