Salvage Squad shows that Britain had many areas of expertise in bygone days, and still has some excellent engineers today although increasingly the products are not on such a grand scale.
The program also shows that many of the old skills survive in small firms and with enthusiasts, many of whom devote their time for the love of it, the program also presents some modern-ish examples of engineering, but to be honest I like the big heavy stuff made in the early 1900's
It gives an insight into the ways things were done without modern computers and how marvelous machines were made to be things of beauty, relying on the skill of ordinary people who to my mind produced works of art far exceeding any Picasso, who would know if an extra brush stroke on his painting would ruin it..!
This is not the case with engineering, everything has to be in the right place and made properly, and I would say that the Squad seem to spare no expense in getting things right.
What also fascinates me is when someone who actually worked with some item being rebuilt is brought on screen to let us know what they did and the problems they faced.
I would like to see an episode showing perhaps how massive lathes were made... do we still have any in this country, I remember a machine company in Reddish Stockport which made such things, now long gone; please could we have an angle on these massive machines..
