Part of the Free Cinema Movement, and number 3 in Ford of Britain's "Look at Britain" series, John Fletcher's "The Saturday Men" is a well made documentary about the off-field lives of the players and others at West Brom. The film shows board room decisions, training sessions, supporters quibbling, the struggle to make it onto -- and maintain one's position on -- the first team, and a touching sequence showing a retiring player starting a new career as a sales representative for a machine parts distributor. Made at a time when even the star players had to work for a living after retirement, and most others were living a modest life even at the peak of their careers, this film shows players who play for their own love of the game, and is a nearly perfect production. It's a shame this was left out of the BFI's Free Cinema DVD box set, it's better than many of the titles included. It's well worth finding a copy of this elsewhere if you have the means.
