This is an anthropologically rich documentary, focusing on worship of temple deities, how the gods and the demons interface with Bali life, and the dances, trances, legend restagings, etc. that serve as both the Balinese "language" and the basis for their interactions with the immortals.
Its only detriment is being shot in black and white. A number of the rituals are also shown in the 1937 two-strip Technicolor docudrama LEGONG, which can provide further illumination of the colorful costumes.
Endlessly fascinating look at a completely different culture (from our USA) and a rich find. Just packaged on a new Milestone DVD (along with LEGONG and the previously thought lost, KLIOU THE KILLER.)
