A Predictable Film Noir, Full of Clichés and Coincidences

Minor Spoilers

In Florida, Matt Lee Whitlock (Denzel Washington) is the local chief police. He was responsible for the prison of a great lord of drugs and had his picture stamped on the front page of many newspapers. Presently he is divorcing from his wife, the homicide detective Alex Diaz Whitlock (Eva Mendes), and has a lover, Ann Merai Harrison (Sanaa Lathan). Ann is married with the former player Chris Harrison (Dean Cain). One day, Ann goes to her doctor with Matt, and she is informed she has a terminal cancer, having a maximum of six months of life. She tries unsuccessfully to raise some money, using her insurance policy, for having a better treatment and traveling to Europe. Then, she puts Matt´s name as her primary beneficiary in the insurance policy. Matt decides to give the US$ 450,00.00 that is in custody in the police safe box, once it is the evidence against the arrested lord of drugs. The schedule for using that money in court is about two years, when Matt would return it with part of the money of the life insurance of Ann. On the next day, the house of Ann and Chris is under fire and their bodies are found completely unrecognized. Meanwhile, the DEA requests the evidence stored in the police department for some further investigation. The police investigation in the two corpuses shows that the persons were dead before the fire. Out of time, having just a couple of hours to solve the crime, Matt runs a parallel investigation of the mystery, trying to find the money. The result is very predictable. I had participated in a promotion about cinema and won the ticket for this film. Having Denzel Washington in the cast, I indeed expected a great movie. But it is not! The story, full of coincidences, clichés and very predictable, looks like a comedy not funny, or maybe a laughable police story. Maybe it works on VHS or DVD, but spending time and money going to the movie theater is not worthwhile. There are lots of B-movies much original than this one. Denzel Washington disappointed me in such a role. A similar plot was magnificently explored by David Mamet, in `The Spanish Prisoner'. But `Out of Time' is pretentious and ridiculous. My vote is five.

a B movie with an A list star

This is the type of movie you expect to see at 10 on a Friday night on HBO. It had the plot of a film that gets sent straight to video, but it got released in theaters because of Denzel. Denzel,Matt, is a cop whose separated from his hot detective wife, Alex, and having an affair with a married woman. One day the woman asks him to take her to the doctor, which is weird itself because it is a cancer doctor and you would think she would have been to see him with her husband. But, she says Matt is her brother and the doctor tells her her cancer is back and it's not curable. So, Matt thinks she should at least try to treat it and he wants her to leave her husband who she says hits her. So, he has a large amount of money he recovered that won't be turned over to the FBI for months. So, he gives her the money so she can escape her husband. The night she is supposed to leave, her house burns down and two bodies are recovered. So, the police are trying to solve two murders when they discover arsen. Plus, the FBI wants there money back early.

Since Matt was spotted at the house by a neighbor, he knows he would be the first suspect, so he tries to hide the fact he was having an affair with this woman from his wife, who is the lead detective. So, he tries to avoid being seen by the witness at the police station and he alters phone records. He gets help from a friend who realizes he is trying to cover up his involvement. So, the latter part of the film is him finding clues and being just ahead of his wife.

(SPOILERS): If you couldn't see the big twist coming, then you don't see many films. I guessed from the beginning that girl was lying about the cancer, and it wasn't her and her husband's bodies in the burned house. But, how she knew Matt would just give her the money, I don't know. He sure was stupid; how did he get to be a sheriff. Plus, you knew it would turn out to be her idea to get the money and she faked bruises by her husband.

And, I hated the ending because why would Alex just take Matt back after he'd been screwing around town. She was smart and certainly didn't have to take him back. That part was so Hollywood; it didn't have to be a perfect ending.

FINAL VERDICT: This film has some cheap thrills, but the plot is too easily guessed. There's not enough of a mystery. So, I don't recommend it because there are too many films out there where a mystery is involved and the big twist is done much better.

slick and entertaining

In a small Florida coastal town, a respected and recently divorced police chief is caught up in an illicit affair with a married local resident. He uses unlawful means to try and get her out of a jam, but soon finds himself in over his head when she and her husband turn up dead and all of the evidence points to him. Now he must race to not only try and solve the case, but also to stay a step ahead of his own department before they can piece together the evidence that will deem him the culprit. Tense, skillful thriller with good direction, lots of twists, and plenty of close calls. Denzel is, as always, superb, aided by a solid supporting cast. ***

This is like a Summer beach read. Not bad, but also not memorable.

What really stands out for me about "Out of Time" is just how nicely it captures the hot and steamy locale of coastal Florida in the Summer, right down the sex scenes (with a score that perfectly suits). You can just feel the humidity. But aside from the stunning Eva Mendez, that's about it. The movie does kick into moderate gear with Denzel running interference between police and the mounting evidence of his involvement in the double homicide - which becomes preposterous at times, but solid direction keeps things moving. Still, the coincidences are absurd, and rob the movie of any depth. Plus, it's Dean Cain as the villain; a recent graduate of the Hasselhoff School of Goateed Bad Guy Acting.

6/10

Good acting saves otherwise simple plot

6/10

I thought Out of Time was OK, mostly because of Denzel's acting. In this flick, he portrays a local police chief with questionable morals. He drinks on duty, he plays a bit loose with evidence, and then, there's the women in his life.

Eva Mendes looks absolutely stunning here. However, I found her a bit miscast as Denzel's soon-to-be ex-wife, now ex-cop, promoted to Detective. I found her unconvincing as a detective, but give her high grades for effort. I think she just lacked the acting skills to keep up with Denzel.

On the other hand, the other woman in the story, Sanaa, she was terrific. She portrays Denzel's high school sweetheart, and I guess they split, but now, she's back in his life. She is apparently dying, and Denzel starts feeling sorry for her, and he does things he shouldn't do to help her. then things get out of control and Denzel is trying to stay one step ahead of the investigation while he's trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

His medical partner, Chae, John Billingsley, was also terrific. He has Denzel's back at all times, and portrays this likable, but annoying, gadfly-like character who kind of annoys you, but intrigues you at the same time. Chae plays a real important role at many times in this movie, particularly the end.

However, despite good acting, the plot is somewhat thin. Since you know that Denzel is innocent, there's no mystery thinking that maybe he is guilty. See the movie, Gone, where at least you were wondering if Amanda Seyfried was crazy or not. Once you knew Denzel was innocent, it wasn't a big leap to figure out who was behind all this mess. So a weak plot spoiled otherwise strong acting and interesting characters.

Based on all these factors, I give it a 6 out of 10. Worth a watch, just adjust your expectations to a B grade movie and you'll be fine.

Caught in the Web

7/10
Author: sol from Brooklyn NY USA
29 September 2012

***SPOILERS*** Film noir murder drama with Denzel Washington as Baryan Key police chief Matt Whitlock who get's himself trapped in a fraudulent insurance scheme that almost lands him behind bars or in his grave. Trying to help his girlfriend Ann Harrison, Sanaa Latham, get treatment for her terminal cancer Whitlock uses $450,000.00 of confiscated drug money he has locked in the police station's safe to pay her way to Switzerland and get the life saving treatment that she so desperately needs. As things turn out both Ann and her abusive husband Chris, Dean Cain, end up dead in a suspicious fire that engulfed their home that also incinerated the 450 G's he gave her.

What made things even worse for Wintlock is that he was put by Ann on an insurance policy as the sole beneficiary for a $1,000,000.00 payment in the case of her death! This put Wintlock on the spot in being the #1 suspect in both Ann & Chris deaths that has now been declared or upgraded as an arson murder. And as for the now gone 450's, that he expected the insurance money to replace, Wintlock has to answer to the DEA in what happened to it. A lot like "Body Heat" that covered the same ground as well as territory, Southern Florida, the film "Out of Time" has Whitlock set up in a complicated scheme to defraud the insurance company that has all the evidence pointing at him.

***SPOILERS*** Backtracking to get to the the meat of the matter Whintlock finds out that Ann and Chris, together with a phony doctor, had used him to get their hands on the drug money and end up framing him not only for stealing it but murdering them as well! Now with time running out and the ax about to fall on him, by the DEA agents finding out he heisted the drug money, Wintlock can only hope that he get's to both Ann & Chris before the law gets to him as well as them skipping out of the country and leaving him holding the bag!

***MAJOR SPOILER***Beautiful Florida photography as well as fine acting from it's cast especially the sexy and hot as a Florida summer Eva Mendez, who looks like a young Raquel Welch, as Wintlock's estrange wife Alex as Baryan Key's top homicide detective make the somewhat uneven storyline and unnecessary sub-plots in "Out of Time" more then watchable. In the end Wintlock finally tracks down those who tried to frame him,Ann & Chris, but ends up at the end of a gun barrel pointed straight at his head and about to go off. That's until Alex shows up in the nick of time to prevent that from happening!

2nd time around , I like it

I watched this about a year back and didn't think much of it. I watched it again last night and have to say i enjoyed it. It isn't as strong as most every other movie that Denzel has been in though. With out him, it would have been bad. it may have been the writing a bit or possibly the acting of the wife that he was having an affair with. All in all, Denzel did his best to carry her. The plot was a great idea and the area that they filmed in made it very realistic.Eva is great as she is to watch , seems to continue to improve with her acting skills. I think they could have found a better actor for the the husband. He didn't come across as very strong to me. Also maybe a little more character building for him ( a little ) would have helped.

OK i did not expect too much and what i got was more than i thought. it is one of those close calls kinds of films with a great setting and back drop and good performances. denzel once again is solid but the person to watch is (eva mendes) she really takes charge in a strong role that is not seen to often today and not to mention she looks OUTSTANDING and for those regular guys who will watch this film is going to say what i said about the other woman denzel had pick over her in this film ( i'm not going to spoil it) you'll have to watch it, and back to the film the close call thing is what keeps it going and a lot of suspense and good story telling and mendes.

Time killer

SPOILERS AHEAD: Passable if dopey thriller featuring the ever-reliable Denzel as a cop struck stupid by the heavy scent of one too many sultry women in his complicated life. He's a cop with a very sexy wife who also happens to be a cop and his soon-to-be-ex, and an even sexier gal pal who feeds him a sob story about having an incurable disease. He swallows this musk-scented fable hook, line and sinker and steals some drug money from the station safe for her "operation." Only she disappears with the money, and he realizes he has been set up. The rest of the flick has Denzel struggling to stay one step ahead of guess who -- the soon-to-be-ex, who is hot on his trail. She turns out to be as dumb as he, however, and it all works out in the end. The bad guys die, the good guys live. So what else is new? A great dumb flick for a really dreary Saturday night. Denzel is OK playing a man addled by too much tang. The two gals are spectacular. Check them out on IMDB. While you're at it, check out the two gals from BOAT TRIP. Imagine the four of them in one room. Your room. Heads would explode.

Denzel why do you waste your time and talent??

Author: RNWilson

Well it was another one of these. Over an hour and a half of my life spent building something up and taking the cheapest way out for an ending. This occurrence has plagued movies for years. Just like insomnia, this film has an actor that could be doing much better and a no brain ending. It is too bad nobody is original anymore, don't ya think?

If you need some good old action entertainment with no originality check it out. If you waiting for Denzel's next career defining film look elsewhere.

I give it a 5 out of 10.
