12 December 2012 9:27 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

A project we've been following since we first discovered in late 2010, finally gets a trailer, and release. Recapping... when we first wrote about it, director Carl Franklin had been quiet for awhile it seemed; at the time, he hadn't been behind the camera since 2003, when he directed Denzel Washington in the thriller, Out Of Time. Fans of Franklin should be pleased to know that he's returning to the feature film director's chair, to produce a film called Bless Me, Ultima, based on Rudolfo Anaya’s award-winning novel of the same name, which chronicles the turbulent coming-of-age story of Antonio, a young boy growing up in New Mexico during World War II, and »

Rookie Blue Round Table: "Out of Time"

11 August 2012 10:45 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

"Out of Time" concluded an intense two-part episode or Rookie Blue... with an abduction, a birth and a death that shocked many viewers.

In this edition of the Round Table, TV Fanatic staffer Christine Orlando is joined by Rookie Blue fan Chuck, and Kathryn and Nathalie from the Two Worlds Collide Fan Forum. Jump in as discusses Luke's return, Nick's questionable behavior and who predicted Jerry's horrible demise...

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene?

Chuck: The scene with Noelle and Frank with their new baby!

Kathryn: I'd say threeway tie between a dying Jerry picking himself up to tackle the killer and plant his cell phone, Frank coming in to see Noelle and his new baby, and Traci getting the news too late from Andy. The writing and acting was just incredible in this episode!!

Nathalie: Andy describing the assault because Sam was caressing her shoulder/back in it was so soothing. »

Rookie Blue Review: So Much For Happy Endings

10 August 2012 12:29 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

I should have seen it coming. When Jerry and Tracy looked so happy in the opening of "Out of Time" it seemed too good to be true - but I thought the baby issue would break them up. I had no idea what was about to happen.

When Jerry walked up to that door alone, I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I couldn't help but think that he wouldn't be walking back out.

Oh, how I wish I had been wrong.

Going into this episode I thought the most intense moments would be about finding Gail. Not that her abduction wasn't a nail biter, but for me it was eclipsed by Jerry's story. I hate that Jerry's being written out. Although I've never claimed him as one of my favorite characters, he certainly adds something to the show. I'll miss his jaded sarcasm as well as the romantic heart he kept hidden. »

Rookie Blue Q&A: Eric Johnson on Luke's Return, His Favorite Moments and More

8 August 2012 8:53 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

On Thursday, Rookie Blue returns after a mini hiatus, as fans hope to receive some answers after the cliffhanger that concluded "The Girlfriend Experience."

In anticipation of the episode, I spoke with Eric Johnson yesterday, whose Luke Callahan rejoins the crew at 15 Division this week. Luke's goal may be to save Gail, but the actor shares here how his character's reappearance might be awkward for some, while also speaking on his favorite storyline and who else he hopes to see again on Rookie Blue.

-------------------------------------------

Why did they wait until the ninth episode to bring Luke back and were you surprised by the delay?

No. After the last season aired and before going to the third season I talked with our executive producers.  We felt it was definitely needed to get Luke out of there so that you don't get the mopey ex-boyfriend hanging around while Sam and Andy are »

Director Carl Franklin to Helm Corrupt Cop Drama 'City Of Night'

30 May 2012 8:45 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Most recently plying his wares on TV shows such as Starz's “Magic City” and HBO's “The Pacific,” director Carl Franklin has decided to step back into the cinematic arena where he got his start, nine years after he directed the Denzel Washington actioner “Out of Time,” for a dose of shady business with the law.

Deadline reports Franklin has signed on to direct “City of Night,” an L.A.-set thriller written by David Chisholm, best known for writing the Fred Savage film “The Wizard,” peculiarly enough. 'City' follows Emmett Conlin, a rookie cop aspiring to rise through the Lapd ranks through its toughest crime units, until he faces a veteran corrupt cop eager to bring him down. Emmett then becomes the target of a psychological betrayal from within the department, and soon he doesn't know who to trust, or where to run.

Carl Franklin to Direct Thriller City Of Night

After working on a couple of well-received cable dramas, Carl Franklin (Out of Time) is headed back to the movies. The Magic City and Falling Skies director has signed on for cop thriller City of Night. Penned by David Chisholm, this one tells the tale of a rookie policeman assigned to the toughest unit in Los Angeles; once there, he quickly gets mixed up with a crooked vet, who initiates an “elaborate psychological game to destroy him.” In the official release, it’s described as an “explosive, sexually intense thriller.” It’s also compared to La Confidential and The Departed but interestingly, not Training Day, which…doesn’t it sound a lot like Training Day? Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a rip-off or anything. Just don’t be surprised when the bad cop (who may or may not compare favourably to King Kong) is shocked (wink, wink »

‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ Director Carl Franklin Getting Behind ‘Night of the City’

29 May 2012 4:31 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Sometime this year, Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress) will release Bless Me, Ultima, his first feature since 2003′s Denzel Washington-led thriller Out of Time. Which, really, is just a simple way of saying he’s been out of the movie game for a spot of time — and, now, it would seem as though his extended stay in TV land is coming to an end.

TheWrap reports that he’s been hired for City of Night, a David Chisholm-penned “Los Angeles-based thriller” that McDonald Entertainment and Meyers Media Group will be financing. How Franklin gets to put his name to the city isn’t evident right now, though the “thriller” aspect is a little clearer; City revolves around rookie cop Emmett Conlin, who gets thrust into the “toughest crime unit” the Lapd has to offer, and is soon “drawn into a web of deceit and corruption that »

Carl Franklin/City Of Night: Lapd Corruption

Instead, this City of Night, from a screenplay by David Chisholm, is set inside the Los Angeles Police Department. The following synopsis comes courtesy of TheWrap: "Emmett Conlin [is] a rookie cop who joins the Los Angeles Police Department’s toughest crime unit. Conlin is drawn into a web of deceit and corruption that threatens his job and his life." Does this sound like a Training Day remake? That cop flick about the putrid underbelly of the Lapd (and of Los Angeles as city) was directed by Antoine Fuqua, and starred eventual Oscar winner Denzel Washington as the scuzzy cop and Ethan Hawke as the babe-in-the-woods rookie. Considering that Hawke somehow managed to make his absurd character believable, he fully deserved his Oscar nomination (though in the wrong category, »
