Carl Franklin Currently Shooting Adaptation Of Rudolfo Anaya’s “Bless Me, Ultima” For 2011 Release

18 November 2010 7:25 PM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Director Carl Franklin has been quiet for awhile it seems; he hasn’t been behind the camera since 2003, when he directed Denzel Washington in the thriller, Out Of Time. That was 7 long years ago.

Fans of Franklin should be pleased to know that he’s returning to the director’s chair, and is actually currently shooting a film called Bless Me, Ultima, based on Rudolfo Anaya’s award-winning novel of the same name, which chronicles the turbulent coming-of-age story of Antonio, a young boy growing up in New Mexico during World War II, and his relationship with Ultima, an elderly medicine woman who helps Antonio navigate the dangerous battle between good and evil raging in his village, and ultimately helps him discover his own spiritual identity.

The project was actually announced in early 2009, and Franklin, who’s also the screenwriter for the film, has likely been working on adapting the »

Music: Review: Tired Pony: The Place We Ran From

27 September 2010 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Tired Pony reveals its superstar ingredients in the first few minutes of the album-opener, “Northwestern Skies,” as the voice of Gary Lightbody—singer for UK superstar group Snow Patrol—quietly collides with Peter Buck’s mandolin, airlifted from R.E.M.’s Out Of Time. The supergroup, which also includes Belle & Sebastian’s Richard Colburn and guest turns from She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and Editors’ Tom Smith, was Lightbody’s idea. He originally conceived of it as a country album, but casual fans of his main band won’t be able to tell the difference between Snow Patrol and »

Women of Color Box Set Vol 1

16 September 2010 4:49 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Not really a big fan of some of the films that they picked, and scratching my head as to what on earth made them come up with these films. From time to time, studios release a large box set of films at a fraction at what you would have paid for one stand alone disc. The Matrix set comes to mind, upon it’s initial release and subsequent sequels that were unveiled, it was attached with a nice price tag of about $20-25. Now you can obtain your own copy of the series for $10 at Target.

Now of this particular set, it’s nice to see Secret Life of Bee’s get some love. The film is really excellent and the superb Sophie Okonedo shines as always. It caught me by surprise for I wasn’t expecting much, and went in with the lowest of expectations. Didn’t quite care »

Interview: The Other Guys' Eva Mendes

6 August 2010 10:42 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Eva Mendes has never been an actress to stick to genres. She.s done action (2 Fast 2 Furious), drama (We Own The Night, Out Of Time) and comedy (Hitch, The Women), and has looked stunning in each one. Her new film, the Adam McKay/Will Ferrell movie The Other Guys, not only blends the action and comedy genres, but allows her to look her hottest. I got the chance to sit down with Ms. Mendes (as well as her giant dog which happened to be sitting on the couch right next to her) and talked about what it was like working with her dream director, the atmosphere on set, and what its like to sing .Pimps Don.t Cry. to Will Ferrell. Check it out below. Going into this film were you a fan of Ferrell and McKay.s work and how did you come to be involved with the film? »

'Prince Of Persia' Playlist: 30 Seconds To Mars, Lil Flip And Blur Draw A Line In The Sand

28 May 2010 9:30 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Apparently, Hollywood thinks American wants an adventure in a desert. Thursday (May 27) saw the opening of "Sex and the City 2" (most of which takes place in Abu Dhabi), and today sees the release of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which also spends most of its time in the middle of the desert. The latter (perhaps best thought of as a male counterpart to "Sex and the City 2") casts Jake Gyllenhaal as the heroic Dastan, a heroic character who must battle his evil adopted uncle Nizam (played by Ben Kingsley). It's based on a hugely popular and innovative video game series, so the flick features plenty of jumpy action and pretty-looking stunts.

For that kind of adrenaline rush, you should really prepare yourself with a batch of film-appropriate tunes. That's why we've put together the video playlist below, which brings together one of the best songs ever »

The National Movie Awards 2010

8pm, ITV1

Live from London's Royal Festival Hall tonight, it's the third National Movie Awards, which is to the Oscars what Pixie Lott is to Aretha Franklin. Hosted by noted movie star James Nesbitt, it would be wise to anticipate rewards for big films with little substance, since tonight is all about box office smashes like Avatar and Harry Potter. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Inventing an award for films that haven't even come out yet – that's the closely fought Most Anticipated Must-See Summer Movie category – is, however, plain daft.

TNT Signs Up With Spielberg For Alien Invasion Series

22 January 2010 5:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

TNT, the network known for its legal/detective dramas (including endless reruns of Law & Order), is now venturing into Sci-Fi with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks on a series that will star Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood. The series, despite not yet having a name, has a pilot directed by Carl Franklin (Devil in A Blue Dress, Out of Time) — who is also working with Spielberg on episodes of the forthcoming WWII television mini-series The Pacific — and a story written by Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat.

Noah Wyle, who has become quite familiar with TNT through his numerous The Librarian TV Movies, will star as a professor that winds up in the rebellion against the alien invaders. Bloodgood, who really seems to have a taste for the genre with her past roles Terminator: Salvation and the “canceled too-soon” series Journey Man, will play a therapist that works with surviving children of the invasion. »

Details Emerge for TNT’s Steven Spielberg-Produced Alien Invasion Series, Moon Bloodgood Joins the Cast

We reported back in June that Noah Wyle was cast as the lead in Spielberg's untitled alien invasion series for TNT, and now we finally have more information on the project. It still doesn't have a title, but we've learned a few new details --- including some additions to the cast. Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation, Journeyman) --- who must really like science fiction since she's always getting cast in genre work --- joins as a therapist who helps children cope with the trauma of the alien invasion. Wyle plays a former professor who becomes the reluctant leader of a resistance group (is there any other kind?). Spielberg is exec. producing this project, and he also came up with the idea for the series in conjunction with screenwriter Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan). Carl Franklin (Out of Time) directed the pilot, and he also did some directing work on the upcoming »
