'Rock' earns $20 mil roll

6 October 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Paramount's School of Rock went to the head of the class on its debut at the boxoffice this weekend as the Jack Black starrer struck a chord with moviegoers and raked in an estimated $20.2 million. The opening for the PG-13 rated comedy from director Richard Linklater, about a down-on-his-luck musician turned substitute teacher who creates a band with his grade school students, was the second highest for Black, behind 20th Century Fox's Shallow Hal ($22.5 million) and was the fifth biggest in October. MGM's Out of Time was the frame's other wide release. The Denzel Washington starrer, a PG-13 rated noir-thriller helmed by Carl Franklin, clocked a respectable estimate of $17 million to take the second spot. »

Franklin ready to raise gavel on 'Emperor'

16 July 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Carl Franklin is in discussions to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' legal thriller Emperor of Ocean Park, based on Stephen Carter's novel of the same name. Studio-based John Wells Prods. and Gaylord Films are producing. Negotiations are expected to begin this week. Emperor would be Franklin's fourth feature film based on a novel after previous efforts with High Crimes, One True Thing and Devil in a Blue Dress, the latter of which he also adapted for the big screen. Stephen Schiff (True Crime) adapted Emperor, which is about a black law professor who gets caught up in a deadly game while investigating the mysterious death of his father, a legendary conservative judge. John Wells and Hunt Lowry are producing the project. Kristin Harms and Stacy Cohen are executive producing. Warners exec Kevin McCormick is overseeing the project. Franklin, repped by WMA, recently wrapped shooting the MGM thriller Out of Time, starring Denzel Washington. »

Moritz men have movies in genes

5 March 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

LAS VEGAS -- It's not often that a speaker at ShoWest or any other convention gets to introduce a top movie producer as someone he's known "literally since he was in diapers." But Milt Moritz, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners of California/Nevada, was able to introduce producer Neal H. Moritz that way at ShoWest's opening ceremony Tuesday morning at the Paris hotel here. The elder Moritz perhaps engaged in a bit of parental bragging when he said that even when his son was an infant, he could see in the boy's face a "keen understanding" that would later allow him to hone in on the tastes and wants of moviegoers everywhere. But Milt Moritz was well-justified in bragging a little when he said that his son had back-to-back, $126 million-plus releases last year -- XXX and Sweet Home Alabama -- and four films scheduled for release this year: 2 Fast 2 Furious, S.W.A.T., Out of Time and Torque. »
