Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat (2003) Poster

Trivia

Mike Myers was unaware that a piece of the house would fall behind him near the end of the film. His reaction was real.
As a result of this film, Audrey Geisel, the widow of Dr. Seuss decided to reject any consequent live-action adaptations of her husband's work claiming that this film differed from her late husband's Family Friendly Material.
The film contains a number of adult themes, such as:
  • The Cat begins to explain to the children where babies come from before being cut off by Conrad.

  • When the Cat spots the photo of Joan he unfurls it centerfold-style, gets excited saying "hummina hummina" and his hat extends.

  • In the first verse of The Cat's first song, he sings about a cat who never listened to his mother and was finally taken to a vet and neutered. He sings the line as "...and they cut off all his ba... ba... ba..." and cuts off by saying "Boy!". In a deleted verse, which is included on the film's soundtrack, the Cat sings about a know-it-all (based on his opinions of Sally) who liked to be the "teacher's pet" (based on his opinion of Sally). He takes the To Do List out of her hands and she chased the Cat and sings the line "...she liked to be the teacher's pet, always the head of the class, she took a ton of TNT to kill the bug up her a..." and cuts off by saying "Ask me...".)

  • When Sally exclaims that jumping on the couch is "like being in the circus!", the Cat says, "Yeah, but without those tortured animals and drunken clowns that have hepatitis."

  • When the Cat cuts his tail off he yells out "SON OF A BI..." before it's bleeped out and the broadcast is terminated showing a picture of a cat in a hat hanging on to a rope while a chorus whistles The Girl From Ipanema.

  • After the Cat unsuccessfully tries to capture Nevins, he 'talks' to the hoe he is holding, calling it a "dirty hoe". He then apologizes with "I'm sorry baby, I love you", finally proceeding to lick it.

  • The acronym of the Cat's car's former name is S.H.I.T. (Super Hydraulic Instantaneous Transporter) which Conrad is about to say before the Cat cuts him off, saying "No! Quick to the S.L.O.W.!"

  • While the Cat and the children ride Mrs. Kwan (like a boat) through the warped house, The Cat comments at the flame-throwing-toilet, starting "Something like that really burns my a...", only to be cut off as they start going down a steep log flume descent.

Among the props stolen from the production were an 8-foot pair of glasses, a 6-foot by 4-foot by 8-foot anvil, a 4-foot key and a golf ball 7 feet in diameter that weighed more the 200 pounds - total value: $55,000. The stolen props where later found at mall dumpster, covered in graffiti.

The pink-housed village was built especially for the movie in the Moorpark, California area, on a hillside just south of the 118 freeway. When it was first constructed many local residents complained to their elected officials that such an eyesore had been allowed to be built, but were assured that it was just a movie set built and that it would be torn down upon completion of filming which, by December 2002, it was.

The Cat costume is made of Angora and human hair and was fitted with a cooling system. To keep Myers cool during the outdoor shoots, a portable air conditioner was available that connected a hose to the suit between shots. The tail and ears were battery operated.

The downtown area outdoor shots were filmed along a Pomona, California street where a number of antique and gift shops are located. The community decided not to redecorate after filming ended, so the surreal paint scheme and some of the signage can still be seen as it appears in the movie.

The Cat and his accessories (the Things, his lawyers, props) are the only things with the color scheme of white, red, and black. This was done so the Cat would pop out more in the movie as a colorful character.

The scene where the Things "clean" the house, moving the spots from one area to another, was inspired by the book sequel, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, where the Cat moves cake stains from one spot to another.
