Hayley Catherine Rose Vivian Mary Mills Establishes Her Avenue
WeatherViolet24 April 2010
Peter Graves narrates this account of the life and career of Hayley Catherine Rose Vivian Mary Mills, born to British stage performers Mary Hayley Bell (Lady Mills) and Sir John Mills, between actress sister Juliet Mills and film producer brother Jonathan Mills.

Hayley and her family have enjoyed a particularly close relationship throughout the years, as Mary and John have encouraged their children to demonstrate their fine talents before audiences. While Juliet trains for theatre acting, Hayley joins her father in the film "Tiger Bay" (1959), for which this promising child achieves rave reviews.

From here, Hayley begins to realize many changes in her young life....

* Hayley at the young age of 12 is discovered by Director J. Lee Thompson, initially considering the lead role in "Tiger Bay" as a boy, before meeting Hayley and discovering her fine talent.

* Lillian Disney spots her performance in "Tiger Bay" and recommends to husband, Walt, that Hayley test for the starring role in "Pollyanna" (1960), for which Hayley proves a natural.

* Walt Disney, who personally welcomes the Mills family to Hollywood and Disneyland, has spoken of Hayley as "the greatest movie find of the past twenty-five years."

* Hayley's follow-up film, "The Parent Trap" (1961), becomes the highest-grossing film to date for Disney Studios.

* Hayley once records a soundtrack record album in one day's time for this Disney film.

* Throughout her teenage years and well into her 20's, Hayley develops an eating disorder as a self-conscious result of performing on screen.

* At age 20, Hayley shocks her fans by shedding her G-rated on-screen image, and marrying Producer Roy Boulting, 33 years her senior, and the father of six children, two of whom elder than Hayley.

* Hayley devotes herself to her domestic responsibilities, by taking a ten-year absence from film and television, to rear her children, accepting roles in English theatre during this period, but not leaving UK.

Hayley marries Producer Roy Boulting (1971–1977), with whom she welcomes son Crispian Mills, as well as son Jason Lawson, with British actor Leigh Lawson.

This concentrates upon her prolific film career of her youth during the 1960's, and then follows Hayley through the years, as she maintains her healthy and youthful appearance throughout the decades, she continuing to act in film, on stage and on television.

(If you last see her before this in 1986, for example, then you may very likely think that this 1999 episode has been taped more than a decade earlier, as the years in-between and since have proved very kind to Hayley Mills.)

This episode cites several of Hayley's Theatre roles, including "Peter Pan," "A Touch of Spring," "The King and I," and "Fallen Angel," the latter co-starring Juliet Mills for the sisters' first stage project together.

Interview Guests for this episode consist of Actresses Hayley Mills, Juliet Mills (sister), Maureen O'Hara and Nancy Olson, Actors John Mills (father) and Maxwell Caulfield (brother-in-law), and Film Historian/Critic Leonard Maltin.

Archive footage includes Hayley Mills with Co-stars Karl Malden, Peter Brown, Deborah Kerr, Peter McEnery, Roddy McDowell, as well as Walt Disney, Roy Disney and (elder son) Crispian Mills, in speaking parts, plus Elvis Presley, Alan Bates, and others in non-speaking parts.

Film Clips include a screen glimpse of Hayley through the years, in scenes from "Tiger Bay" (1959), "Pollyanna" (1960), "The Parent Trap" (1961), "Whistle Down the Wind" (1961), "Summer Magic" (1963), "The Chalk Garden" (1964), "The Moon-Spinners" (1964), "That Darn Cat!" (1965), "The Trouble with Angels" (1966) and "Twisted Nerve" (1968), plus footage from Hayley's Australian theatre tour of "The King and I," and Crispian Mills' singing performance with the rock band "Kula Shaker."
