Game Of Thrones Director Alan Taylor Set to Helm Thor 2

24 December 2011 1:21 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The musical chairs game of choosing a director for Thor 2 continues on this fine Christmas Eve, as Marvel has now nabbed a (hopefully) permanent director for the project. Following the exit of Patty Jenkins over the ever-popular “creative differences”, Emmy-winning TV director Alan Taylor has now been set to take the helm. Taylor’s impressive resume includes the pilot of Mad Men, two episodes of Game of Thrones (the shocking penultimate episode “Baelor” and the season finale), and a handful of installments of The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and The West Wing. He’s also directed three feature films including 1995’s Palookaville. Hit the jump for more. We previously reported that Marvel had narrowed their picks down to Taylor and fellow television director Daniel Minahan, but Deadline reports that they've settled on Taylor. While I was excited to see a female director chosen to helm the big-budget franchise entry, Taylor's a fine replacement. »

Exclusive: Billy Campbell Talks The Rocketeer Blu-ray

14 December 2011 1:47 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director Joe Johnston brings his 1991 classic to Hi-Def for the first time December 13

Before directing the Nazi smashing, highflying World War II era Captain America: The First Avenger, director Joe Johnston embarked on a similar adventure with the now classic pulp comic throwback The Rocketeer. Dismissed upon its initial release in 1991, this soaring escapade has grown into a solid cult hit, and stands as one of the best superhero movies of the 90s.

The film follows young pilot Cliff (Billy Campbell), who stumbles upon a secret rocket-pack that turns him into a daring masked vigilante, out to stop the Nazis and win the girl. We recently caught up with Mr. Campbell to reminisce about The Rocketeer's twentieth anniversary, its lovely debut on Blu-ray, and his return as Darren Richmond on Season 2 of The Killing.

Here is our conversation.

Thor 2 Narrows in on Directors Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan

9 December 2011 4:23 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this week, director Patty Jenkins stepped away from the superhero sequel Thor 2. Today we have word that Marvel Studios is eyeing TV directors Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan. It isn't clear if there is a front runner among the directors as of yet.

Both directors have feature films under their belts, Alan Taylor with Palookaville and Daniel Minahan with Series 7: The Contenders, but both are primarily known for their TV work. Alan Taylor has directed episodes of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and Boardwalk Empire, while Daniel Minahan has directed for True Blood, The Good Wife, and Grey's Anatomy. They have both directed episodes of the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Marvel is also searching for a new screenwriter to take over scripting duties on Thor 2. Sheldon Turner (X-Men: First Class), John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World), Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan »

Paul Bettany’s Voice In For ‘The Avengers’

21 November 2011 10:52 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

While the Iron Man films gave rebirth to the career and stardom of Robert Downey Jr. thanks to the oddly perfect casting of him as Tony Stark, they carried supporting casts of big-name talent, one of whom many don’t even realize is in the film.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) played a part in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as the voice of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s Artificially Intelligent computer who helped in the creation of Stark’s Iron Man armored suits. According to Bettany, he’ll again provide the voice of Jarvis in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers next year.

J.A.R.V.I.S., which stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System, can be considered one of Tony Stark’s special abilities since he’s one of Marvel’s biggest superheroes who actually doesn’t possess ...

Blu-ray Review: Screwed – Never Offends But Never Impresses Either

25 October 2011 11:24 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

It’s a tough climate lately for independent British cinema. With funding cut to the UK Film Council (one of the primary bodies for film investment in the UK) these past few years have been a rather bleak period for moving image this side of the pond. As a worker in the industry myself, I always rejoice a little when something British comes along with a budget, however paltry, and I actually followed Screwed as it was being produced. It certainly has potential; based on the best-selling British novel by Ronnie Thompson it was directed by current British hotshot Reg Traviss (helmer of Joy Division) and contains a whole host of British faces that you’ll likely have seen repeatedly on the British terrestrial channels.

Screwed tells the semi-autobiographical story of novel author Ronnie Thompson and his experiences while working in some of the UK’s worst prisons. »

Watch Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World On The Seven Seas!

Ok, here’s an exciting event for WhatCulture! readers living in the very South of the UK. Talisker, The Single Malt Scotch Whisky-Made by the Sea, is hosting the world’s first-ever Sail-In Cinema at this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week On Friday 12th August where they will be showing a very unique screening of the seafaring, Oscar nominated classic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

The screening will be followed by the spectacular annual firework display and the night promises to celebrate the end to a remarkable week of sailing.

I love the seafaring adventure genre and especially Master and Commander, which is such an authentically beautiful made picture, one of the best the genre has ever produced and because of author Patrick O’Brian’s stunning collection of novels involving further compelling Aubrey adventures, the blueprint for a successful trilogy is of course already there, »
