Russell's Expensive Haircut

31 December 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood megastar Russell Crowe pushed up the budget of his new film Master And Commander by $150,000 - just to get his hair cut. The Oscar-winning actor left the crew of the Napoleonic war epic displeased after his demands and requirements pushed spending up considerably. Crowe, who has recently become engaged to girlfriend Danielle Spencer, demanded that his favorite Sydney based hairdresser Belinda Jeffery was flown in first class every time he needed her and all her hotel and expenses costs were footed by the production budget. A source says, "Russell was throwing his weight around on set from the word go. He did not get on with the hairdresser who had been provided for him and threw a strop until the producers agreed he could fly Belinda in whenever she was needed. They had to agree to fly her first class and as she had a busy salon in Sydney they had to fly her back too. It cost them at least $150,000 and really it was something that could easily have been done by any hairdresser. He insisted that Belinda was the only one he wanted to touching his hair. The rumor on set was that he was going grey and he was pretty sensitive about it." »

Crowe Cleans Up

26 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hellraising Hollywood star Russell Crowe has vowed to clean up his act and quit drinking, after a series of drunken outbursts. The Gladiator Oscar-winner stunned diners at a London restaurant and found himself splashed across the front pages of newspapers earlier this month after starting an alcohol-fuelled brawl. But friends of the actor say he is determined to shed his trouble-making image - and he's even prepared to quit drinking. Crowe refused to drink a drop of alcohol last week at a New York tribute concert for victims of the Bali bombing. A friend says, "Russell is determined people will not see him as some drunkard who gets p***ed up and then has a fight. He is a deeply intelligent man and is capable of staying sober if he so chooses." Meanwhile, pal Paul Bettany - Crowe's costar on new movie Master And Commander - insists people have got the wrong impression about Russell, after the star gave the film's cast and crew a special treat. Bettany reveals, "Russell has got this bad reputation but it's unjustified. When we were filming in Mexico he took the entire cast out swimming with dolphins - hardly hell-raiser stuff." »

Russell Crowe Taking Break

18 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Russell Crowe is taking a break from the showbiz world after admitting he is suffering from "massive stress." The Hollywood hellraiser, who was reportedly involved in a fracas at a London restaurant last week, has cancelled a US tour with his rock band, 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts and is to fly home to Australia within days. Crowe says he is quitting Britain to be with girlfriend Danielle Spencer and his dad Alex, who is about to have operations for a condition that causes the fingers to go numb. In an emotional statement the actor said, "Though I love all aspects of my work, the success of the last three or four years has also brought with it an undeniably massive level of stress, not only to me but to my immediate and extended family and to my friends and friendships. My father will begin a series of operations in December to try to relieve the excruciating pain of what has been diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome in both of his wrists. With the recovery period plus the physical rehabilitation between operations I need to be at home and available to him and my family during this time. Let me clarify something else. I am in love with Danielle Spencer but I don't get to spend nearly enough time with her. Dani has been very patient with all of the speculations of the past year or so which I thank her for. I feel a great need to wake up with her as many days of my life as I can." 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts were set to support The Pretenders on their American tour early next year. But pals say the Gladiator Oscar-winner is determined to be with people who he cares about after filming his new movie Master And Commander in Mexico. »

Crowe Joins Mourners at Harris Funeral

5 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood badboy Russell Crowe was close to tears at the London funeral of Gladiator co-star and close pal Richard Harris yesterday. The Oscar-winning actor flew 5,000 miles from filming Master And Commander in Rosarito, Mexico to attend the service in St Thomas More Catholic Church in Chelsea, west London and the private cremation in Mortlake, south west London afterwards. Russell told journalists outside the church, "I love him and I miss him." The actors became boozing buddies as they worked on the Roman epic in 2000 when Russell played General Maximus Decimus Meridus opposite Richard's Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Before Richard's death last month the Irish hellraiser tipped the Antipodean star to carry on his badboy behavior. Richard said, "Top bloke, loves his rugby, doesn't give a stuff, brilliant actor, a much loved new friend. He will carry the baton on. He irritates the hell out of the Hollywood bigwigs, but he's much too good for them to ignore." After the service, Russell spoke to the grieving family and kissed Richard's eight- month-old grandson and hugged the actor's son Jared, 37. The Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets star's coffin, draped in an Irish flag was carried out of St Thomas More by six pall bearers, including his sons Jamie, 36 and Damian, 39. Richard's ex-wives Ann Turkel and Elizabeth Rees, who Richard remained friends with until his demise, were also present. »

Crowe Blasted for Bali 'Snub'

30 October 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe pulled out of a charity appeal for Bali bomb victims at the last minute . costing the event a small fortune. According to British newspaper The Sun, the Gladiator star had agreed to record a message for the Red Cross telethon in aid of those injured and families of the 187 people killed in the attack on 12 October. But the paper claims Crowe refused at the last minute to cooperate with a camera crew sent to Mexico to film him. A furious Australian television executive is quoted as saying, "Russell actually cost this appeal in money and in time. He should be ashamed of himself. We knew he was filming in Mexico but we were still keen to get him involved in the charity. He is one of our greatest exports and so we were delighted when he agreed to give his support to the telethon. However upon arrival the five-strong crew were told to pack up and go home. "Russell had changed his mind and would not now be doing it. It would have taken 10 minutes of his time." Crowe was meant to film his appeal message during a brief break from making his new movie Master And Commander. But a spokeswoman for the actor says, "Some people consider Russell's non-appearance on the Bali telethon as a disingenuous one. The feature film on which Russell is working in Mexico is somewhat behind schedule and as a result additional rehearsals and filming have to take precedence over everything else. Russell was set to record something for the telethon, but at the last minute he could not leave the shoot to do this. Russell supports many charities." Stars who did lend their support included actress Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue. They helped raise $4.5 million for the appeal on October 20. »

Russell Crowe Embarrassed By Gray Hairs

17 June 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gladiator hunk Russell Crowe is apparently so embarrassed about going gray that he sacked an on-set hairdresser. The star reportedly didn't like the way the stylist provided by producers of latest flick Master And Commander covered up his graying hair--so the employee was promptly fired. The demanding actor then ordered the bosses to fly his Australian hairdresser Belinda Jeffrey first-class from Sydney once a month--costing the production more than $140,000. A source says, "We have only been making the movie for a few days, but Russell has already been throwing his weight around, making sure everyone knows he is the biggest cheese around here. But no one could believe it when he started making all these demands about his hairdresser. Russell is supposed to be this hard man but he has obviously started believing his hype. The rumor is that the hairdresser is extra important to him because he has started to go gray. He is pretty sensitive about it." »
