Pioneer television producer Martin Manulis, best known as the producer and sometimes director of Playhouse 90, an anthology of live dramas that aired in the late 1950s, died in Los Angeles Friday at the age of 92. The series helped define CBS as the Tiffany Network in its early days. Several of its original plays were adapted for the screen. Manulis himself produced one such adaptation, The Days of Wine and Roses, which starred Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. In 1954, he produced Casino Royale, the only James Bond novel ever to be adapted for live television. In 1985 he produced the 13-part miniseries, James A. Michener's Space, which covered the U.S. space program from the end of WWII to the manned landing on the moon in 1969. »

Barry Nelson, whose Everyman appearance allowed him to play a variety of characters in movies, on the stage and in TV shows during a career that spanned more than 65 years, died on April 7 at age 89, the Associated Press reported Sunday, citing his wife Nansi. Nelson was the first actor to play James Bond, appearing in a live TV adaptation of Casino Royale in 1954 for the CBS anthology series Climax -- eight years before Sean Connery first played the character in movies. A kinescope recording of the drama was discovered in 1981 and was later released on home video. »

Barry Nelson, the first actor to play James Bond, has died in Pennsylvania. He was 89. Nelson was a big star for MGM studios in the early 1940s after he was spotted by a talent scout and signed to a series of films including Johnny Eager, Dr. Kildare's Victory and A Yank on the Burma Road. He also became a military favorite during World War II by starring in the wartime play Winged Victory. He reprised his role later in a movie version of the play, alongside Red Buttons and George Reeves. Nelson returned to his acting career after the war and starred in films like Time To Kill and Undercover Maisie, and played the first James Bond in a one-hour TV adaptation of Casino Royale in 1954. He became a prolific stage star throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appearing on Broadway in hits like Seascape and The Act, which earned him a Tony nomination. »
