Worst 20 Films of 2011 – Season of the Witch, Red Riding Hood & More!

31 December 2011 5:11 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Having spent the last year sat in screening rooms and cinemas watching over 200 of 2011′s cinematic offerings, it stands to reason that I’m going to have to sit through a fair share of duds. As I had seen the vast majority of the key Oscar plays before November, I spent the latter part of the year dedicating myself to seeking out the worst, most lowest common denominator fare ripe for a skewering, and with these twenty dreadful pictures, we have what are, in my opinion, the 20 biggest train wrecks of 2011. Note that Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is still awaiting worldwide DVD release and didn’t get distribution in the U.K., so that’s one that I was forced to avoid, but I’m assured that it’s irredeemably horrible nevertheless. Anyway, on with the list…

Final Destination 5 Blu-ray Review

22 December 2011 7:00 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Despite the fact that the Final Destination series was supposed to have come to an end with Final Destination 4, here we are again.  New round of kids, same ol’ specter o’ death, always up to some sort of Rube Goldberg-ian shenanigans.  By now, this franchise has established itself as the go-to series for “seeing people killed in inventive, gruesome ways”, and there’s nothing wrong with that.  But Final 4 was genuinely terrible, the first film in the series to make me question whether or not all the scenes that weren’t drenched in viscera were worth suffering through in order to get to the money shots.  Would Final Destination 5 return the franchise to its “not great, not even good, but watchable for the kills” glory?  Find out in my review, after the jump. The short answer is, “pretty much”. None of the Final Destination films are referred to by their actual titles, »

Theatrical Trailer for Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11

25 October 2011 5:32 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The theatrical trailer for the horror film 11-11-11 has been unveiled. From Saw II director Darren Lynn Bousman, the pic tells the story of how at 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the 11th gate of Heaven will open up and an otherworldly entity will enter the earthly realm for 49 minutes. Judging from the trailer, some demon-like thingy and some other creepy beings will bring about absolute terror for the duration of the film. While I’m not entirely sold on the project, I do like that it appears to rely heavily on prosthetics and make-up as opposed to CGI effects. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Timothy Gibbs (Another World), Michael Landes (Final Destination 2), and Wendy Glenn (The L Word). 11-11-11 opens on, well, November 11th. Here’s the trailer (via Yahoo!): »

Given the lack of polish on the logo and the mention of Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, we’re guessing this was meant as sales art, but figured that fans interested in the sequel would want to see it anyway.

Shark Night 3D

Stars: Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Chris Carmack, Katharine McPhee, Chris Zylka, Joel David Moore, Donal Logue | Written by Will Hayes, Jesse Studenberg | Directed by David R. Ellis

The latest shlock-horror flick from director David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane, Final Destination 2), whose films never cease to disappoint me, is another slice of fun-filled fear frolics which sees Ellis do for sharks in freshwater as he did for snakes on planes. This time round a bunch of college students head out to the Louisiana Gulf and a friends lake-side cabin to enjoy a weekend of partying, only there’s a problem – the psycho redneck locals have let loose a bunch of man-eating sharks in the lake! Imagine if you will a slasher movie such as the classic Friday the 13th series with its lakeside woodland setting and strange locals, then replace its hockey mask wearing »

Shark Night 3D Review: A Toothless Mess Of A Film

2 October 2011 8:29 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

It is painfully abundant from the outset of Shark Night 3D that director David R. Ellis (behind such entertainingly shlocky fare as Final Destination 2, Cellular and Snakes on a Plane) has attempted to capitalise on the surprise success of last summer’s boobs-laden bloodbath Piranha 3D. However, while that film was chock full of self-aware humour and gleefully over-the-top gore, Shark Night, which like Piranha was not screened for critics, is an irony-free snooze-fest which can’t even deliver some basic bloody satisfaction thanks to a studio-mandated PG-13 rating in the U.S., which transcribes to an incredibly meek “15″ in the U.K.

Like Piranha, Shark Night suffers from an overly long buildup in which characters are pointlessly introduced to us as though they will actually come to mean something to the audience, but at least some of the banter coming out of Joel David Moore »
