Bad Spanish Imitation of a Bad Fluffy Hollywood film

Author: lunabar from United States
7 December 2005

I enjoy foreign films, precisely because they tend to be fresh and innovative. This mess of a film is trying too hard to imitate the fluff screwball comedies that Hollywood puts out and does a very bad job at it. The characters are one dimensional, caricatures of real humans and the premise lacks credibility. That wouldn't be too bad if it were entertaining, which this film is not. The actors did what they could given the material, unfortunately they are never able to give pathos to their characters.

When watching this film you will have the sense that you have seen it before, it borrows imagery from an array of Hollywood offerings from "Look who's talking" to "The Big Chill". Unfortunately for Apasionados, it lacks the passion of the Hollywood versions on every level.

An Average Romcom

Directed by Juan José Jusid, Apasionados a.k.a Passionate People stars Pablo Echarri, Nancy Dupláa and Natalia Verbeke. This Argentine film follows airline stewardess Uma and her desperate attempts to become pregnant.

Uma, a beautiful hostess, Lucia, her best friend and owner of a travel agency very special and Nico, the boyfriend of this, tour guide. Uma, tired of waiting for the man of her dreams to raise a family, decides to take the bull by the horns. Her roommate, being homosexual, is not an option; nor are any of her co-workers or friends. It's her best friend and recent divorcée Lucia who ultimately offers her own boyfriend, Nico as a potential candidate. Though they had planned to induce pregnancy by artificial insemination, unforeseen circumstances force them to make a baby the old-fashioned way. As Lucia begins to suspect that something is amiss, Nico's feelings for Uma become increasingly strong.

This is basically an average romantic comedy whose screenplay is formulaic, clichéd and standard. The only good thing about it is the presence of its good looking Argentine actors and actresses.Nothing more.

Designer baby

Some women will go to extremes when they want something badly. Take Uma, a flight attendant, whose only desire is to become a mother. She is an attractive woman; there will be millions of men that would love to make her dream come true, but no, Uma is set in having Nico, her best friend Lucia's boyfriend, to be the donor of the sperm she needs to conceive.

Uma, who has done the research about how to administer herself the procedure, doesn't count that clumsy Nico will break the device where the sperm is supposed to be stored for the insemination. In a state of panic, Nico, who feels responsible for the mishap, does the ultimate favor in doing the real thing, hoping the miracle will occur.

Lucia feels betrayed when she finds out what really happened. All is forgiven with Nico as she plans for her elaborate wedding. Unfortunately, Uma's baby decide to make an entrance just as the wedding is about to begin. Nico can only do the right thing to be with Uma to await the arrival of his son!

"Apasionados" a pleasant comedy from Argentina, is mildly amusing. This Spanish-Argentine co-production doesn't break new ground. Director Juan Jose Jusid, who also worked in the screenplay, shows some flair for the way he stages the film. Unfortunately, there are no surprises, as the viewer has figured it out before the end.
