A group of innocent hostages is left to his own death facing a clockwork bomb, while the whole country watches them on the TV.
This movie had a really bad reception by the critics and even a big part of the public. The reason for that is unknown to me. But I have a theory.
There are many ways to make the audience laugh. `A Bomba' chooses perhaps an easy one, but I must admit, it accomplishes it in a fantastic way. Using a comedy, which has been a huge success in movies like `The Naked Gun', it takes the ridicule to new heights. Used in a wrong way, this kind of genre may very quickly make a movie collapse, but in this case, the script, the actors and the director do all they can to hold the movie together and fortunately they succeed.
The script is imaginative, well written and funny. Very funny. The characters are complete clichés but with a touch of individuality. They connect to us, and make us love them. The situations, the settings, the dialogue, it all displays a genius, hard to find, particularly in Portuguese modern cinema.
The actors are deeply involved in their work. We can see they are having fun, and that makes us enjoy it too. Even dramatic actors as Diogo Infante pull off great comedic performances, giving a serious look to the movie that only enlarges the surreal and the humor.
The direction is a pleasure to watch. Leonel Vieira is a young director, with a huge talent and he shows that here. Great shots, good use of the camera and the light. What a future this man has in front of him! He gives his soul to the public every second and it's amazing how he took a chance at a movie many would immediately reject. Congratulations.
But `A Bomba' also has a serious side. It's a fantastic mirror of the state of the country, the government and its institutions. It uses the burlesque to show the truth. And sometimes the truth hurts.
The modern Portugal, its people, their weaknesses and virtues, its all present, in a funny but powerful way. A social satire.
This is the great achievement of `A Bomba'. It makes us laugh, think, wonder and maybe understand what is all around us.
See it. It's a good example of the modern Portuguese cinema. It' obviously s a work of love by the people involved, and I can only thank them.
Good Job!
