Photos – Fringe 2.11 "Edina City Limits"

30 December 2009 3:46 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

I am seriously behind on Fringe, which is unfortunate, because I hear it's getting crazy good.  When the show returns on January 14th (see when your other favorite shows return in 2010), the group will be traveling to a small town to solve a mystery there.  Fox has released promo photos and a synopsis of the January 14th episode.

The Fringe Team Pursues Leads To Get To The Bottom Of A Small Town Cover-up On An All-new "Fringe" Thursday, January 14, On Fox

Following an unexplained attack involving hideously deformed humans, the Fringe team visits the small town in upstate New York to uncover leads surrounding the bizarre case. When it's determined that these deformed people have managed to hide themselves for a while and they'll do just about anything to keep it that way, the investigation takes an unexpected turn in the all-new "Edina City Limits" episode of Fringe airing Thursday, »

Fringe's next real episode (not the unaired season one episode) will be titled "Edina City Limits," and it sees the team getting out of the lab big time, as they travel to a small town in New York to solve a mysterious case. Here's the press release, followed right by some promotional photos for the episode.

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.

Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.

Casting Standouts: The Hurt Locker

8 December 2009 1:03 PM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Chemistry was the key in concocting director Kathryn Bigelow's explosive thriller "The Hurt Locker," says casting director Mark Bennett. Mark Boal's story, built out of his experiences as an embedded journalist in Iraq, focuses on the last weeks of a three-man Army bomb-disposal squad's tour in Iraq, as Sgt. J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Spc. Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) contend with the tactics of their impulsive new team leader, Staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner)."You always want to cast each actor with the rest of the cast in mind, but particularly with this, it was just the three of them onscreen so much that, strangely, it was kind of like casting a love story," notes Bennett. "If one of them had fallen out, it was possible that the other ones wouldn't make sense."Renner was first on board. Bigelow "just recognized that he was perfect," says Bennett, »

Kristen Stewart's 'Welcome To The Rileys' Role Is Only The Latest Fictional Stripper In Hollywood

7 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

With pictures of Kristen Stewart as a stripper in the upcoming Sundance player "Welcome to the Rileys" hitting the Internet last week, we decided to take a look back at five Hollywood actresses who starred as a stripper in the past, and how the decision impacted their careers. Some were launched into success stories, while others took a sharp downward turn. Hopefully, Stewart will take some pointers from those who came before her and avoid squashing the success "The Twilight Saga" has given her. If that's even possible.

One unusual fact that's worth noting: three of the five names on this list -- Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan and Heather Graham -- all followed up their stripper appearances with roles in the Emilio Estevez-directed film, "Bobby." It's hard to say what that means, though three counts as a trend. Apparently, fake stripping drives female actors to Emilio Estevez. Go figure. »

Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

6 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

Assassination Of A High School President DVD Review

25 October 2009 6:24 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Despite an interesting cast and passionate pleas from more than one film critic, Brett Simon’s Assassination of a High School President is the latest project to be burped out of the gaping, bankrupt maw of the Yari Film Group and directly onto the DVD market. Yari’s failure has claimed some terrific films - most notably a pair of Rod Lurie movies - and although Assassination doesn’t quite deserve to be lumped in with the best of the studio’s aborted litter, it’s certainly better than most direct-to-video projects, and well worth a rental and 90 minutes of your time. My review after the jump:

Sort of a clownish, noir-scented blend of Rushmore and The Usual Suspects, Assassination stars the deliberately Jason Schwartzmann-like Reece Thompson as Bobby Funke (it’s pronounced “Funk,” but everyone says it “Funky”), a wannabe cub reporter for the paper at St. Donovan’s High, »

Massive ‘DJ Hero’ Set List Revealed

15 October 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As you have seen, we’ve been closely following the release of DJ Hero, the next step in rhythm gaming from Activision. Today is no exception as the company has now released the full 93 song set list for the game. While all club styled mixes, remixes and mashups, DJ Hero boasts one of the most varied collection of artists in any Hero franchise release.

With everything from the Jackson 5 to 2Pac, Daft Punk to Queen and everything in between, that variety of DJ Hero’s playlist is unmatched, as long as you like mashups and remixes. If you are a musical purist to the extreme, this game isn’t really what you’d be looking for.

In addition, the game will feature 10 tracks where players can plug in their Guitar Hero guitar and play alongside their friend on the DJ Hero turntable for a true real time rock / dance mashup. »

Interview With Paul J. Salamoff

Special FX artist, Producer, Writer, Director, Film executive and most recently Comic Book Author, twenty year Industry veteran Paul J. Salamoff could be considered a sort of Renaissance man when it comes to the Hollywood machine. He’s also written the definitive guide to Movie Sets called, On The Set: The Hidden Rules Of Movie Making Etiquette. However, what I found to be the most compelling and sobering fact about Paul is that above all else the man is a true fanboy. Like the rest of us, his work stems from his passion for science fiction, horror and fantasy. It reaches back to his childhood and the countless hours spent watching classic films, reading, and just letting his imagination run wild over the limitless possibilities imbedded in the human psyche. Of all the interviews I’ve done over the years with relative strangers, his was the most easy going and comfortable. »

Review: Did You Ever See… Swingers?

8 October 2009 10:04 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Couples Retreat is released this week. Once again Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn re-team, this time in a comedy about four couples who attend a therapeutic couples retreat, little knowing they’ll be expected to put their relationships under the microscope.

Vaughan and Favreau have worked together in several films, most notably in Favreau’s self-penned Swingers in 1996. Directed by Doug Liman, it’s a hip, trendy comedy with cool, likeable characters and endlessly quotable lines. Or is it?

When i first saw Swingers over 10 years ago, i loved it. I loved the snappy dialogue and the laid back attitude of the characters, as they hit the best nightspots and hot parties. My experience re-watching it this week was entirely different.

Mike (Favreau) is a comedian slash actor, who has been in La for sixth months since his girlfriend left him. Mike is really the main character. Now, usually, the main character is likeable, »

Assassination of a High School President DVD Review

7 October 2009 4:42 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Assassination of a High School President is yet another Hollywood tragedy that had all the promise in the world, but, through bad turns of offscreen circumstance, never got the shot in theaters it deserved.

The film was a hit at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and people were calling it the next Brick - pretty much because both films are homages to the Film Noir era, set against the backdrop of modern high school. After the Yari Group, the owners of the film, went bankrupt, the film’s fate was left to question. Assassination of a High School President has finally been released direct-to-dvd this week and we’ve got the review for you.

The plot of Assassination of a High School President follows Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), a hard-nosed reporter (and geeky sophomore) working for the school paper, who can never quite finish his epic conspiracy stories. While covering a piece profiling St. »
