Review: "Star Trek Beyond" (2016) Starring Chris Pine, Karl Urban And Zachary Quinto

By John Lemay

Over the years I’ve noticed an interesting phenomena among Star Trek fans which is that most of them love the television series but seem only to tolerate the films. Maybe my perception is off, seeing as how I fall into the category of a non-fan who greatly enjoys the films—namely the ones from the 1980s starring the original cast—but not the TV series from which they were based. For whatever reason, there seems to be a strange sort of disconnect between fans of the TV series and mainstream audiences. Take for example the films that deviated greatly from the series, such as the overly comical Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) which soared at the box office, while films that most resembled episodes of the TV series—namely the awful Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)—performed below expectations. Star Trek Beyond: Zachary Quinto, Sofia Boutella, Chris Pine interview

Ryan Lambie Jul 21, 2016

Three stars of Star Trek Beyond talk to us about Red Bull, the franchise's meaning and breakfast burritos...

Doing a junket in Australia one day and finding yourself at another junket in London the next can't be easy on the constitution, which explains why actor Zachary Quinto was clutching a can of Red Bull when we sat down with he and co-stars Sofia Boutella and Chris Pine a few days ago.

They're here, of course, to promote Star Trek Beyond, the third in the rebooted series which began in 2009 with Jj Abrams' Star Trek and continued with 2014's Star Trek Into Darkness. This time around, we're in for a more ensemble-y kind of adventure, with Ms Boutella joining the cast as a tough alien named Jaylah, a character who fits into the Star Trek universe so naturally that it feels as though she's always been there. »

Final Trailer for ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Makes Some Noise

27 June 2016 8:49 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Once a movie studio has covered “this movie is a blast” with the Beastie Boys and “this is toweringly epic” with a more orchestral tinge, the final step is naturally “this is earth-shatteringly emotional, but with style” by using Rihanna. That’s the steps taken by the team behind Star Trek Beyond with the final trailer for the sci-fi adventure, featuring the new song “Sledgehammer.”

Following the tragic loss of co-star Anton Yelchin, he doesn’t show up here, but the final trailer carries a more somber tone. It features Chris Pine’s Kirk questioning his enrollment in Star Fleet (and really, the meaning of existence, with the help of some classic on-the-nose dialogue from Karl Urban), Idris Elba‘s Krall in action, and of course, things exploding.

In related news, Justin Lin, who, before taking on this latest Star Trek entry, has directed four entries in the Fast and Furious franchise, »

Star Trek Continues: A Great Web Series and a Great Homage

28 May 2016 8:07 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.

Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

The creative minds behind Star Trek Continues have been putting out original episodes online since May of 2013. The latest release »

Star Trek Beyond Trailer Screenshots Showcase A Scattered Enterprise Crew

If you’re still reeling from Friday’s poignant reveal of the new Star Trek Beyond trailer – aligned nicely with the franchise’s 50th anniversary celebrations – Paramount has premiered a series of screenshots from the sizzle reel, offering up a play-by-play breakdown of all the galactic action therein.

Opening with a shot of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk marinating over his place in Star Fleet – along with his ability to step out of his father’s shadow – with Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban), it isn’t long before Beyond‘s new trailer rolls out the stunning CGI set-pieces.

But whereas ardent Trekkies took umbrage with the sequel’s first trailer, which appeared to lean heavily on Justin Lin’s (Fast and Furious) action sensibilities, there’s much more gravitas to each scene, as the scattered USS Enterprise crew find themselves in the clutches of Krall, a “complex »
