Clint Eastwood's murder mystery Mystic River, starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins; Gus Van Sant's Elephant, about teen violence and starring mostly unknown young actors; and Vincent Gallo's biker drama The Brown Bunny, which Gallo wrote and stars in, are the only U.S. films among 22 selected to compete for the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or this year.
