Grade : C Too much waste
sadiqhassan22 February 2003
Grade : C

The movie started out great, a potential A, but it trailed and in the end went down to a D. In short, this movie was not only a disaster but introcduced nothing new. Me being a travel fan, moved it to a C but more most people "Fail" would sum it up!

Another good Olsen twins movie
dove-196 August 2007
"Getting There" is an enjoyable teen road trip movie--another in the Olsen twins' successful direct-to-video series. While this film was not one of my very favorite Olsen twin movies (I'd say "Winning London," "Our Lips are Sealed," and "Passport to Paris" are among my faves of the direct-to-videos) it was still an excellent movie. I enjoyed the misadventures the Olsens' characters and their friends in the movie had on their journey from L.A. to Utah for the Winter Olympics--while unlikely that in real life they'd experience all their various mishaps on the same trip (missed flights, stolen cars, etc.), the mishaps did really feel like things that would happen in real life. That was what impressed me with this movie and also with "Winning London"--the characters and their adventures felt so real. I mean, these teens acted like the group I had been around in youth and what I would see when I was around my cousins and their friends--other so-called "teen movies" don't have that same feel. When watching the movie, I really felt like I was along for the trip, and I loved that. All in all, I highly recommend this movie if you want an enjoyable and clean teen flick.

Couldn't be much worse

Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be one of the worst movies ever made. I don't see how it could possibly be carrying a 2.7 average rating at the present. I only gave it a 1 because the scoring system doesn't allow a 0.

SPOILER ALERT - How can they be so unconcerned when their car is stolen. It was like, "Oh Well, the insurance will cover it." and they are back on the road the next day.

And is there anything more disgusting than seeing that Toast character constantly chewing food with his mouth open. I mean, people, pay to see the movie, and they have to see that repeatedly. The joke about him being obsessed with eating got old by about 10 minutes into the film.

Conclusion: Spend you time watching something else, like paint drying.

The glory of Toast!
plonty_200028 June 2002
This movie made me want to eat my own face. I'm always excited by how attractive the Olsen Twins are becoming, and the thought of them as young women in their twenties is more encouraging by the day, so where this movie has both of them getting their driver's license...well, I'm just happy to see time passing by so quickly. However, wow! Their movies are BAD!

Clearly, I'm not the ideal audience for this. Not rich, not a girl, not 13, no acute brain trauma that I'm aware of. So I shouldn't have rented this expecting highbrow entertainment, or a steamy seduction scene. Rather, I was treated to smoldering montages of youths enjoying winter sports, miscommunicating as per various modes of transportation, eating at a buffet. And, yes, the wonderful boy-clown, Toast! Good, funny Toast! Toast is a young man who is given the distinct comedic trademark of unintentionally wetting meals that people are excitedly preparing to eat. This happens on more than one occasion, and is surely the high point of the film. God love you, Toast!

I want to stop thinking about this film, it really is making me want to cry. Loud, racking sobs. Oh. Oh.

On another note, and a rather unexpected one: This soundtrack for this movie isn't half bad! Seriously! (I was rather hoping to hear "Fashion Junior High" though. That song rules!)

This was the stupidest and most pointless movies I have ever seen in my life!!
americanjules046 July 2002
I hated this movie! It was pointless! It had no plot and what little plot they had was extremely predictable. They always are the "heroes" in everything and act like everything is perfect. This is the stupidest movie!! Everything is corny and obviously written by a twelve year old!!

The worst of Olsen Twins
peter_garner10 January 2004
This movie is no doubt the worst job they have ever done. The characters, pathetic, especially those dumb guys, and the plot... what plot? There's no worth wasting your time with this movie, and I hope people here do not see this stuff.

don't watch this
DeeJayPip25 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
What, do they hate Utah so much that they don't want to get there, and stall in every possible way? This movie is so stupid. I mean, come on, they don't allow snowboarding at Deer Valley... and Stein Erickson is NOT a "not too shabby" place. It is one of the most expensive places in Utah. SPOILER and the twins aren't too concerned that they got there on the last day of the olympics. END SPOILER

Nobody should be forced to watch this movie

Their worst one ever
star_e528 November 2003
I hate this movie so much. It's their worst one. The plot is pointless. It takes them forever to get there and when they do get to Salt Lake City, it's not a euphoric feeling that they finally reach their destination. My life as a teenager sucks so maybe why I have such animosity for this movie cuz their parents are allowing them to drive out of the state with other stupid teens. And don't forget that stupid girl in the movie. An absolute airhead. My goodness do I hate this movie. I don't recommend this movie.

Unrealistic yet enjoyable
FlyingTampon12 July 2003
I have admired how Mary-Kate and Ashley have developed into such great actresses. Now, about the movie, Taylor (Mary-Kate) and Kylie (Ashley) Hunter celebrate their sixteenth birthday with a new car, a driver's license and a trip to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. They travel with some friends of theirs and this is when it gets unrealistic. They get lost about nine times by taking the wrong Greyhound bus, leaving their topless car in the parking lot with the keys in the car, and a lot of other stuff. If I got lost in the middle of the country, my parents would grab me up in no time! Overall, I liked it and it was a little more mature than their previous films. Another thing: How can a sixteen-year-old use their parents' credit card without the parent being around??

Amongst all the 1 and 2 star reviews...
agossage-1539830 November 2019
I realize I'm going to be the odd one out here, but come on guys, it's a kids' movie. I was 9 years old when this movie came out, and I loved it. I mean, sure the acting is cheesy, and the plot is unrealistic (come on, a bunch of 16-year-old new drivers on a road trip without parents?), but the constantly twisting plot, especially the bit about the stolen car, keeps things interesting.

Steer Well Clear!
blonde_ambition3 February 2005
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been acting since they were nine months old. And you'd think that after over a decade, they might improved over the years, as most actors do. However, they are notorious for their atrocious acting skills, and awful movies. And as Olsen movies go, this one is by far the worst.

Getting There is about a girl named Taylor (Ashley Olsen) who wants to go to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She could have gone alone, but no, she brings along her twin sister Kylie (Mary-Kate Olsen, after all, since when have the Olsens' done a movie without the other?), and a bunch of friends.

Along the way they get into a load of "hilerious" mix ups as every attempt they make to get there fails. So it's basically a movie about these teens trying to find a way of "getting there".

The movie is directed by Steve Purcell who, judging by this movie and his other works, must be the worst director in the world. Second to Ed Wood, though at least Ed Wood was actually entertaining.

The camera shots are awful, the lighting is terrible, the acting is atrocious, and the plot is wafer thin. The dialogue is supposed to be funny but the ultra-crap catchphrases are cringe worthy. One word that gets really annoying? "Hype" They all say it like it's a really cool word, you watch in and think "OMG, these kids are SAD!" Ashley Olsen, as always, can be caught acting the entire time and must be the worlds most unnatural actress. Mary-Kate Olsen does her trademark complete overact, with an expression for every word and hands going everywhere. Billy Aaron Brown, as one of their friends, is just annoying, and the other cast are also just pretty irritating to watch.

The one good thing about this movie? Actress Alexandra Picatto who plays Charley Simms, a girl the twins and their friends meet on their journey. Picatto is the one actress who actually deserves to be doing something better. She's natural in front of the camera, has screen presence, and can act. However, she may only have seemed good in contrast to the rest of the cast.

You'll lose the will to live watching this movie. The best advice I can give you is to save yourself and steer clear!

BballChick15161518 August 2002
This was one of the most pointless movies I have ever had the misfortune to see. It's supposed to be about how the twins can drive now, and so they're taking a road trip, but after 10 minutes (if that) of driving, their car is stolen and they have to find another way to reach their destination. That's basically what this movie is about, trying to "get there". Completely pointless!!!!

I'll keep this short
raptor14729 December 2002
Speaking as a guy who is exactly the same age as these two...... girls.

I must say that this movie is probably the most pointless movie ever done. The jokes have been done before, the plot is wait a sec there was no plot. And the girls as most people would call preps just took that 90 minutes of our time to show off how good they think they look and how funny and witty they think they are.

To tell you the truth at one time a long long time ago I though the twins did have some sort of hot appeal but after watching them do the same thing over and over and over and over and over etc etc again again again that appeal is long gone and replaced with annoyance and hate.

I have produced more and have done more worthy of the screen than they have. At least I am trained to act and write and have some talent.

I predict in the next 3 years if the girls don't alter there methods there so called empire will collapse. God willing.

Peace.

Crappiest movie in the whole world
alliekat0027 December 2003
This movie was the worst olsen movie ive ever seen. The lines they use are so cheesy and lame! The whole movie is SO predictable. Its so typical in every one of their movies, for two guys to fall in love with them. And those stupid guys they travel with...theyre way too over the top with the whole 'dude' thing. Its so pointless how they put in those bits how its just music and it shows them skating and having so called fun. Dont see this movie unless you just love the Olsen twins and their lame scripts. I give this plotless and pointless waste of time a 1/10.

Too predictable, too slow and too contrived- this embarrassing film is easily Mary Kate and Ashley's worst!
TheLittleSongbird14 July 2009
I am really sorry guys, I really didn't like this movie. Like all the other Mary Kate and Ashley movies, though I do like two or three of them, Getting There suffers from being too predictable, and somehow it didn't feel like a movie. The camera-work was terrible, it was too fast and even blurry at times, the first two minutes especially. The script was clichéd and overly-simplistic, and it was also rather unfunny, apart from one or two bright spots with Toast. The story was too predictable, and has been done better many times. The pace of this film was also uneven. The earlier scenes felt rushed and the later scenes dragged so badly. The soundtrack was okay, whilst I liked the one at the beginning, some of the other song choices were poor. I didn't like the acting very much either, the boys especially were annoying, and the film felt as though the director, who didn't do his job very well says I, was just portraying a routine, every-day life scenario, which I have already said, has been done before better. The two redeeming qualities were some great-looking scenery, and the spirited performances of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Other than that, Getting There failed as a good film, and came across as predictable and contrived above all else. If you want an above average feel good film, watch Clueless instead. 2/10 Bethany Cox.

Total Mess
Cremal28 February 2006
I don't mind the usual Olsen movies that much and actually enjoy them for the purposely crappy cheesy appeal sometimes, but this was bad even for them. The movie couldn't seem to make up its mind what it wanted to be, a road trip movie or a snow adventure movie. They tried to have both and it ended up a total mess, combined with one of the worst scripts and camera work ever in a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie which is saying something. Are we supposed to believe that the girls were stupid enough to get their car stolen and their parents not only didn't care, but actually gave them a big barbecue with their friends when they arrived home with a $450 taxi fare and THEN buy them expensive plane tickets? Please! The girls themselves never seemed that into it either, leading me to believe they were as bored with the whole thing as I was and couldn't wait for the filming to be over. They are really getting way to old to be in these things now, yet in The Challenge a year later, they were actually quite good.

A Waste of Film
firefly068620 November 2003
This is without a doubt one of the most awful movies I have ever seen in my entire life. Let's outline the key problems of the movie:

1) Plot: This move has an unbelievably terrible plot. Two twins get a mustang for their birthday, and about an hour into their road trip to Utah they get the car stolen. So they go home, and their parents don't even care that they lost the car. Instead, they buy them airplane tickets to Utah. Let's get real, no parents would react that way. That's just one of the many problems with the movie's so-called plot (some would even argue that the movie has no plot :-) ).

2) Acting: Someone needs to tell the Olsen twins to invest in some acting lessons. It's not as if they can't afford it. I don't see why producers and directors keep making movies with these girls in it when their movies get terrible ratings, mostly because they have lame plots and bad acting.

Maybe had they written a better script and gotten actresses with talent, the movie could have maybe scored a 4/10. But because it was terrible and accompanied by dismal acting, I give this movie a 1 out of 10.

It is a complete waste of time, film, and money.

A great movie!
cooling_boy13 February 2006
I really want to comment on previous comments. The comments that says that this movie is so very bad and that it is the worst they ever seen. They also says that the "Olsens" can't act at all and that they are the worst actresses in the entire world. For the first i actually can't understand how people can think so about the "twins" and for the second, if you think that then you really have to hate the "twins" and i really mean HATE! But people are different and all don't thinks the same so i can sometimes understand them that they think so but they then have to hate them as i said before. Because if you like them then you can't hate any of their movies. They are so cute and nice and act very well. Personally i think that the "twins" are very good at acting and doing their own movies because they usually not only plays in their movies they also are the producers and works a lot behind the camera and have a bog part in the making of their movies. They have their own opinions of what they think are good and bad in the script and if they don't something is correct or appropriate they usually change it in the script. So they make a lot of big decisions to make the movie to get even better and more fashion-forward because they always knows what's popular. So after all you can really say that most of their movies are their "own" movies. And this movie was no exception. A lot of the clothes and stuff they are wearing in the movie they have decide themselves. And that is real fashion. It's one special thing in this movie and that is that they are finally licensed to drive. That make the movie different from the other they have done because they can go to other places a long way from home without their parents and only enjoy the time with their friends and of course boys. They can feel a kind of liberty. And on top of all this they get their own car and they decides to drive to Salt Lake City where the Olympic games are at the time. And that become a real adventure for them and their friends, both problems and funny things happens almost all the time. A road trip that take a long time to forget about. A memory for life! These things make this movie so great and worth to see. A little bit different movie with the "twins" and that is rather exciting. Si finally i can recommend you to watch this and don't listen to the persons who thinks that this is the worst movie ever made on earth! They don't know what they are talking about and aren't "real" "Olsens" fan. But you don't need to be a fan to enjoy this movie because it is for all different kind of people. So hope you will enjoy as much as me! Have a great time in front of the TV!

Painfully Pointless (SPOILERS)
frostedpinkcupcake9 April 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This was and is one of the worst kid's movies I have ever seen. It was a pathetic attempt to capture my attention for an hour and a half, but it failed miserably. If you give this movie anything about a 3, you should be banned from the IMDB site for misleading the readers. Every single thing was predictable, no action or excitement whatsoever. There actually came to a point where I was guessing not only what was going to happen next, but exact lines of dialog and what they were going to do etc. WARNING: Do not waste 90 minutes of your life on the dog. One of the worst things I have seen in I can't remember when. I could go on forever about this, but I am going to go get shock treatment to help me forget about it. The Olsens were just plain awful in this film. They're not New Yorkers and I have to agree with everyone with saying that the accent just didn't cut it. Their acting was really bad and since their performance wasn't up to standards, I'm glad that her role wasn't any bigger. It seems that a lot of people dislike this movie because they think it is unrealistic, or because they don't care about the characters. I think this just goes to show how self-involved and classist a lot of Americans are at the moment. It seems that a lot of people dislike this movie because they think it is unrealistic, or because they don't care about the characters. I think this just goes to show how self-involved and classist a lot of Americans are at the moment.

Anyone who thinks that the "wild and crazy" events that go on in this movie couldn't happen outside of the Olsen movies, would are totally and 100% correct. Who in hell would let their teenage daughters go on a road trip with their boyfriends to the Olymics? And then, when their car is stolen, they just buy them plane tickets. The two teenagers are both stupid spoiled brats who get everything they want. The writer doesn't even give his characters brains or anything. Yeah, it might be a teenage stereotype, but it's one that is also incredibly untrue. You'll probably enjoy this movie if you can relate to any of the situations in the film. If you approach this film with that mindset and without judgment about spoiled brats who get everything they want, this film will make you both laugh and wince because it does, at times, feel more unrealistic than a fairy tale. An "Olsen" film that, from the back of the box, promises twists, adventure and fun we will never forget. This film also fools us into watching it by flaunting the Olsens with starring roles. After the first twenty minutes, you realize that this movie is going to give you NOTHING. The story goes on aimlessly, revealing nothing new or important to keep us interested. All " typical teenager" characters have only small grains of back story to force us to care. Just as you reach the end, everything about the story is altered and instead of helping the audience catch up, you are left with no idea, and more importantly, no interest in "why". The director, who also thought it would be a good idea to co-star, seems to come into the film with no prior experience or knowledge of useful film making. The entire piece looks like a college film crafted by a freshman film student trying to hide a lack of true talent. Pretty dreadful movie about several unbalanced young people going on a road trip starts off reasonably well but becomes more bizarre and hard to swallow as it progresses. This film has no point, unless that is its point. Additionally, it is rather contrived, like a cheesy Olsen film that starts out one way and ends up another. The main characters have nothing in common, presumably, when in fact they do. There is few young males, and 4 young females, each trying to find something by going on a road trip, and that brings them together in an odyssey. The title seems intentionally misleading, unless as a synonym for an onslaught. They all appear to come from different places. That's what we are led to believe.

The story gets stranger and more bizarre as it goes - more than one is not quite right in the head. Sometimes the camera is just shooting pictures of telephone poles and wires, or other spurious details of passing along on a trip to nowhere in particular. The girls have a fancy new car but no money. As her judgement begins to deteriorate more profoundly, her three companions seem to grasp for some control of their destiny. Then the whole story, well, you will have to see it. The line between fantasy and reality is very blurred, and there is a purposelessness to the story. The ending fails to tie us back meaningfully to the beginning. It pretends to give us hope, but more like a wish, a dream, or something hallucinated by a dissociated, childlike mind. This is a film more difficult to ignore than to praise. 0/10.

The Olsen twins can't act!!
lemurs0414 June 2003
Ok they are rich but ther movies are terrible!! The same things seem to happen in every movie!! And this might have been the worse. One character named Jen said "Heat at my feet how sweet". Their movies are usually bearable but this was to dumb. Not many parents let their kids drive to Utah right after they got their license. And then after there car was stolen their parents where cool about it. This really got me. I wouldn't have been driving to Utah if I had just gotten my license and then they were forgiven for losing there car? This is unreal and really stupid don't waste your time.
