New Monsters vs. Aliens Trailer Gives More Detail

23 December 2008 3:28 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

DreamWorks has released another fun-filled trailer for their 3D animated comedy, Monsters vs. Aliens. This second trailer reveals more of the story as well as more of the 1950s style monsters they’ve chosen to include in the film.

The story revolves around California girl Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde), who is hit by a meteorite from outer space and grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. A secret part of the military swoops in to capture her and she’s introduced to other “monsters” the military has been rounding up over the years.

When a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth, the unlikely group of misfits are brought in under desperate order from the President (Stephen Colbert, TV’s The Colbert Report). With the guidance of General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland, TV’s 24), this crew of monsters are called to combat against the aliens and save the world from imminent doom. »

Jack Black to Travel as Gulliver

6 November 2008 6:38 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Jack Black will tower over his co-stars in the remake of Gulliver’s Travels.  The 20th-Century Fox film, according to Variety, will be directed by Rob Letterman (Shark Tale) with a screenplay from Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Joe Stillman (Shrek).

Lemuel Gulliver, a free-spirited travel writer who, on an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of industrious, yet tiny, people.

Jonathan Swift’s 1726 satirical tale is formally known as Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships and was modified by the author in 1735.

The classic has been adapted previously, most notably by the Fleischer Bros. Studios in 1939. The most recent version was a 1996 miniseries which starred Ted Danson. Ross Martin and »

Jack Black to Headline New Gulliver's Travels Adaptation

6 November 2008 10:33 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I imagine most of our readers have some familiarity with the classic tale of "Gulliver's Travels", the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver as penned by Jonathan Swift back in 1726. The most recognized of the four part story is Part I, where Gulliver washes ashore in the country of Lilliput wherein the inhabitants are a mere six inches tall. Variety is reporting that Fox has greenlit an adaptation of this well-known tale with Jack Black assuming the role of the skyscraper-tall Gulliver. Director Rob Letterman (of only Shark Tale and the upcoming Monsters vs Aliens) will update the tale a bit, having Gulliver as a travel writer on assignment in the Bermuda Triangle when he comes across the hidden island of tiny people. The other country involved in the original tale is a rival to Lilliput called Blefuscu. Gulliver is welcomed into the country and initially aides the Lilliputians by taking the »

Gulliver is Traveling Back to the Big Screen with Jack Black

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Scripts, Remakes and Sequels

Move over, Ted Danson and Richard Harris -- there's a new Lemuel Gulliver in town! I guess going all the way back to Year One wasn't enough for Jack Black, because Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox has grabbed the actor to star in a remake of the classic Gulliver's Travels, getting all tall in Lilliput. Rob Letterman (Shark Tale) is directing the film, from a script by Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman.

This incarnation is said to be a "contemporary reimagining," which means -- Lemuel will be "a free-spirited travel writer" rather than a surgeon, who goes on assignment to the Bermuda Triangle, only to wash ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput. There, as we all know, he comes across "a population of industrius, yet tiny, people."

With Black on board, and being all "modernized," I think it's safe »

Jack Black Travels

Jack Black has signed on to star in an upcoming Fox adaptation of the classic Jonathan Swift novel Gulliver's Travels. The film will mark the live-action directing debut of Rob Letterman who previously worked with Black on the DreamWorks animated film Shark Tale. While Fox has been developing the film, they've been trying to keep a low profile as Gulliver is in the public domain and they didn't want anyone beating them to the punch. As soon as Black signed on the dotted line, Fox gave the »

Jack Black to star in 'Gulliver's Travels'

5 November 2008 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Jack Black will star in Fox's re-imagining of the classic tale "Gulliver's Travels."

The film centers on free-spirited travel writer Lemuel Gulliver (Black) on assignment in Bermuda who suddenly finds himself a giant among the tiny inhabitants of the hidden island of Liliput.

"Shark Tale" helmer Rob Letterman will direct, with Nicholas Stoller ("Fun With Dick and Jane") polishing a script by Joe Stillman ("Shrek").

Producing the project are John Davis and Electric Dynamite, Black's production company with Ben Cooley. Fox's Steve Asbell is overseeing the project for the studio. Brian Manis is overseeing for Davis.

Principal photography begins in March, but no location has yet been picked.

Endeavor reps Black and Letterman, who both have new films coming to theaters in the first part of 2009. Black next will be seen in the Judd Apatow-produced "The Year One" for Columbia in June, while Letterman helms "Monsters vs. Aliens," due in March from DreamWorks Animation. »

Kung Fu Panda

5 June 2008 2:55 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Over the last decade, the outpouring of Pixar-imitating Cgi comedies about wacky mismatched animal pals (The Wild, Madagascar, Over The Hedge, Shark Tale, Surf's Up, Ice Age, Chicken Little, Open Season, etc.) has occasionally felt like the output of an infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters, all banging out more or less the same thing. But as in the famous thought experiment, the infinite typing monkeys may have finally produced their Hamlet, or at least as close to one as the genre will allow. Kung Fu Panda is yet another celebrity-voiced animal adventure, but it stands out from the crowd of similar films with its lightning wit and whirlwind brio. Jack Black voices the eponymous character, a fat, gluttonous panda named Po, who labors joylessly in his father's noodle shop (his dad is a goose, for some reason) while obsessing over the world of »
