This is an example of a very rare breed of movie: a softcore erotica movie that actually takes into account some of the things that the genre tends to ignore, such as humour, characterisation, plot and so on.
As the title may suggest, this is based on the popular Playboy show 'Sex Court', which works on a very simple concept. It probably also helped the production team quite a lot, due to the fact that the cast was already there and the characters were already half-written. What 'Sex Court: The Movie' does, however, is take the characters out of the courtroom and place them into a foreign location - the Gothic house of the always-outrageous Judge Julie (note the parody), played excellently by Julie Strain.
The characters' sex lives run rampant throughout the course of the movie, especially when dealing with the new litigants that have been 'invited' to a private Sex Court session, and so you do get to see a bit of bare flesh from Judge Julie, and her 'staff' such as Onyx, Skye, and even her poolboy. However, the sex scenes - although steamy - are often cut down slightly, or interrupted, and this does actually make for good viewing.
The script is actually really good. Seriously. When not tramping through the confused litigants' 'experiences' with Sex Court, we follow the misadventures of Chip - the assistant of Detective Dick, a regular Sex Court character who has gone on holiday - who really is the hero of the movie. Played masterfully, he stumbles around, managing to avoid having any sexual encounters himself, but never failing to raise a laugh. Needless to say, when everything is resolved, it's Chip who has a hand in it.
Yeah, this may be a cheap rip-off of a cheap show, and some of the actors are... well... over-actors... but if you look below the glossy, fleshy surface, there's actually a clever, plotted, witty movie here, with a sexy core cast and a setting to die for, that ought to please fans of the genre, and of Sex Court!
