How ‘High-Rise’ Director Ben Wheatley Got Tom Hiddleston, His Other Actors to Take High Risks

29 April 2016 6:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For a man whose films tackle the darkness of humanity, Ben Wheatley has a reputation as one of the nicest directors around. Actors constantly praise his kindness and some of the biggest names in the business are lining up to work with him. That’s a hearty endorsement, considering what he puts his cast through in “High-Rise,” his adaptation of the 1975 J.G. Ballard novel set in an apartment building that descends into chaos and anarchy.

High-Rise” features Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans and Jeremy Irons amongst its tenants, and manages to be both a brutal and beautiful work of art. Though made on a relatively modest budget of under $20 million, it’s a considerable leap in scale for Wheatley, whose previous films like “Kill List” and “Down Terrace” were made for well under $1 million. It is currently available on demand before hitting U.S. theaters on May 13.

Why I gave 'Person of Interest' another try... and was glad I did

28 April 2016 9:24 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In the age of Peak TV, the quest for the instantly perfect can be the enemy of the eventually good. Once upon a time, the decision to commit to a TV show had as much to do with what it might become as what it was at the moment. Rare is the show that's a Hall of Famer right out of the box, so there's always been guesswork involved: Do I like this premise? These characters? Do the parts I enjoy seem likely to stay while the parts I don't disappear? What's the best possible version of this show, and what are the chances it actually becomes that? In those days, a patient viewer might have endured the early growing pains of shows like Seinfeld, Buffy, Parks and Recreation, or even Breaking Bad, and in time been rewarded by those shows transforming their potential energy into the actual, kinetic kind. »

Though "The Wire" creator David Simon's next project is the 1970s porn drama "The Deuce" starring James Franco, it seems the acclaimed TV showrunner already has another major project in the works.

Simon tells Variety he's working on an adaptation of Tim Weiner's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Legacy Of Ashes" for both the BBC and HBO. The series will take a hard look at the institutional problems in the CIA, and how it weakens national security. Speaking about the series he says:

"[Writers] Ed Burns and Dan Fesperman have taken that. It's in turnaround at the BBC. They want to do the show. They acquired the scripts from HBO and they are doing the show. We are taking another pass at the scripts because they want us to add a certain amount of U.K. stuff. A certain amount of MI6 along with CIA.

The San Francisco Film Society has selected “Spotlight” writer-director Tom McCarthy as the recipient of the 2016 Kanbar Award for excellence in storytelling.
