Exclusive: ‘The Breaks’ Cast Brings ’90s-Era Hip-Hop to Life on VH1

20 February 2017 8:25 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Many of the actors on VH1’s new scripted series The Breaks (premiering Monday, Feb. 20) were just kids during the early ’90s era of hip-hop captured in loving detail on the show. Yet, they’re still able to channel the spirit of that moment in the culture’s history because of how far they’ve gone to prepare for their roles.

For Mack Wilds, who also stars on Fox’s racially charged drama Shots Fired, premiering March 22, that meant actually learning how to spin records in order to add to hip-hop producer DeeVee’s skill set. When DeeVee takes part in a DJ battle at NYC’s New Music Seminar on the show, Wilds was prepared to go through the motions.

“I’m the type of guy who, if you put me up against anything that I don’t understand, I’m gonna go try to find out,” says the actor, who also has »

Newswire: “Fuck normal,” David Simon says during passionate John Waters tribute

20 February 2017 6:22 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

One beloved Baltimore artist paid homage to another at the New York edition of the Writers Guild Awards ceremony last night. The Wire’s David Simon introduced John Waters, who was receiving the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement. Simon recounted how he “completely humiliated“ himself when he first met Waters as a reporter covering a memorial for Edith Massey, otherwise known as “the Egg Lady,” and was more interested in her “outrageousness” than her humanity.

The two eventually became close enough that Waters officiated Simon‘s wedding to his wife Laura Lippman. But Simon didn’t dwell on anecdotes about his friendship with the legendary writer-director. Instead, the crux of Simon’s speech was his eloquent articulation of Waters’ ”gift,” which is simply: “Fuck normal.” Here’s an excerpt:

Fuck normal. Fuck normal. There is no normal. Normal’s a lie. Normal’s a lock gate, a wall »

John Waters Lauded at Writers Guild Awards for ‘A Lifetime of Penning Trashy Screenplays’

John Waters and his fight for the right to be trashy on film was celebrated with gusto on Sunday at the New York edition of the Writers Guild Awards ceremony.

Waters got two standing ovations for his legacy in battling film censors and going it alone as an independent filmmaker out of Baltimore in the 1970s. Waters reveled in the applause and the appreciation, telling the crowd at the Edison Ballroom that he has always thought of himself, first and foremost, as a writer.

“Every single weekday I get up at 6 a.m. and go into my writing room and think up something f—– up,” Waters said. “In the afternoon I go try and sell it. Isn’t that what all writers do?”

Preaching to the choir, Waters added: “Writing is the only part of filmmaking I really love.”

Agnieszka Holland’s Stalin-Era Film ‘Gareth Jones’ Boarded by WestEnd (Exclusive)

WestEnd Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to politically charged project “Gareth Jones,” the next film from twice-Oscar-nominated Polish director Agnieszka Holland, whose latest movie “Spoor” is in competition at the Berlin Film Festival.

Gareth Jones” tells the real-life story of the eponymous Welsh journalist who exposed the Holodomor, Stalin’s 1933 genocide-famine in Ukraine. Research suggests that the reporter was murdered with the help of Soviet agents the day before he turned 30. His reporting of the famine was said to have inspired George Orwell to write “Animal Farm.”

Scriptwriter Andrea Serdaru-Barbul first approached Holland, who is the daughter of journalists, with her script two years ago. “Since then the story has become even more relevant,” Holland told Variety. “The situation around us has change, and you can find some similarities with the 1930s.”

Holland says she receives many scripts with political themes, but this one stood out. “I am always interested in politically charged subjects, »
