Both Triple H and Chris Jericho have stated that they did not want their WWE Championship match to follow the match between Hulk Hogan and The Rock. Their feelings were that the Hogan/Rock match was the true main event and that no other match could top it. Triple H has claimed that WWE management insisted the WWE Championship match be the last match of the evening, in order to preserve the title's prestige.
Steve Austin was originally planned as Hulk Hogan's opponent. But Austin felt that Hogan would not be able to keep pace with him and refused the match. Austin has since stated that he regrets this decision. Austin and Hogan never wrestled each other one-on-one.
The only competitor at the event that competed at the last WrestleMania in Toronto was Hulk Hogan. He lost both matches, and both were his only WrestleMania pinfall losses. No commentators, valets or managers appeared at both events. The only other talents to appear on camera at both are Diamond Dallas Page, who drove a pink Cadillac at VI and defeated Christian at X8, ring announcer Howard Finkel, and referee Earl Hebner.
