"Independent" and "alternative" are
hollow terms denoting only one type of consumer product as opposed
to
another. This is a movie for the Converse-wearing disenfranchised
comic-book reading crowd, the self-fashioned "underworld." Unidimensional,
dingy to look at. Woody Allen schlepism reductio ad absurdum.
Same offbeat downbeat deadbeat territory as "Ghost World."
Interesting for its mix of real characters on which the movie is based and
actors. Use of comic book frames less successful. The basic problem here is
hypocrisy: a character and culture which eschew convention and the
establishment, glory in the common man and the banal, find legitimation in
fame and celebrity. The only reason this schlemiel, Harvey Pekar, made it to
the screen is that he was taken up by R. Crumb and David Letterman, proving

Ps. "Crumb" is a much better movie and representation of this culture.
