Film Review: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Film Review: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’
Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Surely, all “Star Wars” fans hope each new installment will be the best ever. But in the case of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” that seemed like an actual possibility. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, a Sundance alum who established his serious-filmmaker bona fides with his 2005 indie debut, “Brick,” before graduating to young Christopher Nolan territory via the relatively big-budget sci-fi movie “Looper,” Episode VIII seemed to have everything going for it.

To the extent that “The Force Awakens” was essentially a heightened reboot of “A New Hope,” recycling many of the 1977 original’s thrills in fresh form with a mostly new cast, this latest chapter was positioned as the new trilogy’s “The Empire Strikes Back” — which is to say, a darker, more serious chapter (commonly regarded as the series’ best) that deepens the underlying mythology, shapes its emerging

Kim Cattrall Says She Chose Not to Have Children Because of Sex and the City's Busy Shooting Schedule
Kim Cattrall says she prioritized her role as Samantha on Sex and the City over having children.

The actress, 61, opened up about having considered motherhood during an appearance on Monday’s episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, saying that after she got married to her third husband Mark Levinson in 1998, she thought about starting IVF treatments but decided against it because of the hectic shooting schedule for Satc — which premiered that June.

“I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I have 19-hour days on this series. … My Monday morning would start at 4:45 a.m. and go to one or two in the morning.

’30 Rock’: The 25 Episodes You Need to Watch Before Tina Fey’s Iconic Comedy Leaves Netflix
Picking favorites when it comes to “30 Rock” is an awful proposition because the whole series, barring a handful of exceptions, remains an extremely watchable and fascinating comedic journey. But with the show leaving Netflix at the beginning of October (and thus becoming completely unstreamable), we find ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to choose favorites.

Twenty-five episodes equates to less than 10 hours, so you should be able to make the time before September 30. And the adventures of Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney, Jack Donaghy, and beyond are worth it.

“Tracy Does Conan

Season 1, Episode 7

The first season of “30 Rock” was a bit rocky, but “Tracy Does Conan” does a few important things: It introduces Dr. Leo Spaceman (Chris Parnell), casts Conan O’Brien as himself, and features Aubrey Plaza as an NBC page (a job she actually held in real life). More importantly, it features a breathless sense of anarchy,

Tiff 2017: Here’s the Winners and Losers of the Festival
At 255 titles, the Toronto International Film Festival’s smorgasbord is 20 percent smaller than last year — and still overwhelming. A number of filmmakers took creative risks that paid off with exuberant praise, from Darren Aronofsky’s outrageous “mother!” to Guillermo del Toro’s inimitable “The Shape of Water,” but many others found themselves in the doghouse, or worse, utterly ignored.

Buyers were unhappy that there wasn’t much to choose from at this sellers’ market, because many distributors cherry-picked the more promising titles ahead of time — which is its own risk, as when The Orchard’s La riot drama “Kings” didn’t meet high expectations.

Here’s how the festival shook out.

Best of the Fest

Top Tier Oscar Contenders

Guillermo del Toro’s gorgeously mounted fantasy thriller “The Shape of Water” (Fox Searchlight), shot in Toronto, was so popular that it’s vying for Tiff’s audience award (often an

Harrison Ford got candid, admitting fault for landing his private plane on a taxiway earlier this year, in a new interview.

In February, Ford, who is a pilot, was involved in a “potentially serious” landing incident at John Wayne Airport in Orange County when he mistakenly landed on a taxiway instead of a runway, putting him in close proximity to a passenger plane with 110 people inside.

In an interview with GQ, Ford discussed the incident, describing it as “thoroughly embarrassing.”

Although he admitted fault, he also clarified what happened.

“I didn’t fly over him, and it wasn’t a near miss,” he said. “Officially, I admitted to two of the common mental processes that can lead a pilot to making a mistake — distraction and fixation.”

Ford said he was distracted during the incident because he had just visited his 101-year-old aunt in hospice care. “I

American Horror Story: Cult Recap: Won't You Bee My Neighbors?

Emmy Predictions: The Line on Whether Any of These Underdogs Can Actually Win

Emmy Predictions: The Line on Whether Any of These Underdogs Can Actually Win
With more shows competing than ever and a limited number of nomination slots, it’s no wonder more than a dozen great TV shows only snagged one Emmy nomination in 2017. From “The Leftovers” to “Adventure Time,” these series are only up for one award, but some of them could still win. Below, IndieWire has made predictions for a handful of the best one-nomination wonders, so — just like those that take home armfuls of Emmys — these, too, can rightfully be called “Emmy winners.”

Adventure Time

Nomination: Outstanding Short-Form Animated Program

Can It Win? Yes!

Why? A perennial nominee in the category — and six-time winner overall — “Adventure Time” won in this category back in 2015. It lost in 2016 to “Robot Chicken,” but the Cartoon Network series isn’t nominated this year.

In an Ideal World: Other than “Steven Universe,” which is also only nominated in one category, “Adventure Time” is the runaway fan favorite in the category.
