Brainless horror, for the most undemanding audiences only
21 March 2005 | by See all my reviews

A group of beer-guzzling College drop-outs rent a cabin in the middle of a Forrest, but their fun's about to end when a flesh-eating virus begins spreading among them. I put-off watching this for a while because it didn't look promising, but let me tell you, this film is so damn stupid that when it was all over I just found myself starring at the screen in awe. How could this have been made?

Problems start with the script, which is brainless in the most extreme meaning of the word. The characters are so stupid, their actions so dumb, cliché's are plentiful, and the hillbilly ending…what was that? How Eli Roth managed to get the film made is truly beyond me.

Acting ranges from just plain good (Strong and Ladd stood out) to overdone (DeBello) to just plain bad (Andrews). Everyone involved must have wanted money really, really desperately. Hopefully they have all since fired their agents.

The music was also annoying and out of place. A moodier, more atmospheric score maybe would have made the film at least a little effective, but the score the makers decided to use instead consist mostly of annoying pop songs.

If there are any real merits here are the gore effects, from the always reliable KNB effects group, who have done a bang-up job here (the laughable Deer scene not withstanding). There's virtually no CG effects here, thankfully, and the old-school effects were the only thing that had me watching in the end.

"Cabin Fever" is a stupid, ridiculous horror movie that never takes itself serious enough. It had the potential to be a cult classic but fail miserably in the end.

Oh, and is anyone getting tired of gun-slinging in-bred hillbillies in these types of flicks?

1.5/10.
