New Projects: Patty Hearst, ‘Barbershop 3′, and a Lego spinoff

26 March 2015 11:07 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Just days after the 39th anniversary of the conviction of Patty Hearst back on March 20, 1976, Deadline is reporting that Fox 2000 has acquired the rights to a new, untitled book being written by Jeffrey Toobin about the life and kidnapping of Hearst. The writers behind Big Eyes, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, will be adapting Toobin’s account.

Deadline is also speculating the role might also be in development for Jennifer Lawrence, but those talks are currently preliminary.

Hearst was 20 when she was kidnapped from her wealthy parents in the Hearst Publishing Family. She was later found to have changed her name to Tania and had joined up with her kidnappers, the Symbionese Liberation Army and eventually robbed a bank in San Francisco. Hearst’s story, based on her own novel, was first adapted into a film in 1988 by Paul Schrader, with Natasha Richardson in the role. Hearst is now 61.

‘Empire’ Dream Cast: 12 Actors We Want to Reunite with Lee Daniels on Season 2

11 March 2015 5:41 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

When it comes to appearing on Empire, there seems to be one common thread: Lee Daniels. The director, who helped creator Fox’s hit new series with writer/actor Danny Strong, comes from a critically acclaimed film background. Both Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon) and Gabourey Sidibe (Becky Williams) earned Oscar recognition thanks to Daniels work behind the camera.

Daniels has worked with an impressive pool of actors, which includes everyone from Dame Helen Mirren to SeanP. Diddy” Combs. While we’d never expect to see Mirren on the show -- though it would be delightful if she made a voice cameo like she did on Glee -- we do love the idea of Combs getting back into acting, Nicole Kidman returning to her camp days, or even Zac Efron revisiting the musical world that first made him a star.

These nostalgic cult classics may not have won Oscars, but they’ve delivered tons of iconic quotes, life lessons, and may have even inspired a few stand out celebrity Halloween costumes (Keri Hilson and Serge Ibaka as Lisa McDowell and Prince akeem — genius). This time of year, there’s nothing better than snuggling up and having a Netflix night complete with the flicks that made you laugh, cry, and discover your first Hollywood crush (looking at you, Morris Chestnut).

In honor of Black History Month, here are the 10 best black cult classics streaming on Netflix right now. Since we know Netflix likes to change their movie line-ups like underwear, we’ve saved you the trouble of a search.

Coming to America (1988)

This romantic comedy is such a classic that “black cult classic” is simply too confining of a description to categorize it with. Legendary comedian Eddie Murphy plays »

'The Best Man' Director Gets in the Chair for MGM's 'Barbershop 3'

20 February 2015 11:01 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Last year we heard that the comedy franchise Barbershop was getting a third chapter (fourth if you count the spin-off Beauty Shop), with Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Queen Latifah reprising their respective roles. Now the film finally has a director as Deadline reports Malcolm D. Lee, who has been behind The Best Man films, will be at the helm of Barbershop 3. The film is finally coming together quickly with Ice Cube also producing alongside Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. of State Street Pictures as the lead producers. The films aren't runaway hits, but they're cheap to make, and make a decent return. ›››

11 Years Later... A 3rd 'Barbershop' Movie Is Moving Forward, With Malcolm D. Lee in Talks to Direct

19 February 2015 6:39 PM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Frankly, I really could do without a 3rd "Barbershop" movie, but it looks like the stars have aligned in favor of one, as MGM is indeed pushing forward with a 3rd film in the franchise, 11 years after the second film, which was released 2 years after the first. So much time has passed between the last film, and this upcoming threequel, that it's hard to say, at this point, if that fact will work in its favor, or against it. No word on plot yet.  What we do know right now is that Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer are expected to reprise their roles, with Cube's Cube Vision shingle producing.  And, per Deadline, Malcolm Lee is in talks to direct the »

'Barbershop 3' Moves Forward with Director Malcolm D. Lee

19 February 2015 5:19 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Malcolm D. Lee is finalizing a deal to direct Barbershop 3 for MGM, with the studio quickly putting together deals for Ice Cube (Calvin Palmer) and Cedric the Entertainer (Eddie) to reprise their roles from 2002's Barbershop and 2004's Barbershop 2: Back In Business. We reported in March of last year that MGM is moving forward with the sequel, with Ice Cube set to both star and produce.

The report from March revealed that the studio was seeking a screenwriter, but it isn't known if the script is currently being worked on. The original Barbershop was a surprise hit in 2002, taking in a healthy $75 million domestic from just a $15 million budget. The story followed Calvin and the wide-ranging characters that inhabit his Chicago barbershop. The 2004 sequel Barbershop 2: Back In Business earned $65 million domestic from a $30 million budget, and it also spawned the spinoff Beauty Shop starring Queen Latifah.

It was almost a year ago when we last heard about another Barbershop sequel. MGM’s franchise is indeed getting ready to open again with Ice Cube as the only mentioned returning cast member (and producer) last year, but now Cedric the Entertainer is said to be close to a deal to return as well. Deadline also reported that Barbershop 3 has found itself a director in Malcolm Lee (The Best Man). The original 2002 movie, which was actually pretty great, was directed by Tim Story with »
