I have long been a student of sketch comedy, and there has been little to be excited about in my world since Mr. Show, The State & UCB are no longer with us. Sketch Pad is the answer. It's chock full o' great sketches that push the boundaries (thank God for HBO). The sketches avoid the SNL curse of going too long, and they get great performances from the cast. My favorite was the magician sketch, and the Kids in the Hall reunion was fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing the second installment, and hope there are many more to come.
There are basically a few good sketches and fewer good performances in this show. I think that is due to the fact that everything seemed so hurried. The performers must have had a time limit, which is a bad thing to do with sketch comedy. With stand up you might make it, but with sketch comedy you have to see the build up as if it was an actual part of a play.
