Han Solo Firing Proves Studios’ Franchises Don’t Want Directors To Be Storytellers

23 June 2017 11:39 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Oh, the irony: As TV creators seek inventive ways to adapt the visual language of cinema, Hollywood’s big-budget, big-screen movies are increasingly becoming more like television.

With serialized TV shows, control needs to be in the hands of writers and showrunners. That’s because the story is still unfolding and the production is built from episode to episode. The director can’t be the principal storyteller, which makes it challenging to put a premium on visual storytelling.

Those who run the Marvel Cinematic Universe might sympathize. When it launched in 2008, their choices of directors seemed like head scratchers for a big action film. In retrospect, they make perfect sense.

Did Nathan Fillion just tease a Firefly reunion?

22 June 2017 5:44 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

If this isn’t a tease for a Firefly reunion, then series star Nathan Fillion may be the 2017’s biggest troll. A few days ago, the actor shared a photo on his Instagram page… nothing out of the ordinary there, right? It’s a photo of Fillion, and fellow Firefly alums Morena Baccarin, and Alan Tudyk. Again: Nothing out of the ordinary. Old friends have lunch all the time. However, it’s the caption that truly makes one wonder what Mr. Fillion is getting at exactly…

What do we want to believe you talked about, Nathan Fillion? Is that even a question?

Fans cried afoul when Firefly was cancelled back in 2003, and have prayed for a continuation of the series ever since. Fans got their wish, in a way, with the movie Serenity back in 2005, but it still left so many questions unanswered. The world that Mal Reynolds inhabited was a vast one, with seemingly endless stories to tell. Firefly was too interesting for one season, and a single movie. Let’s hope this message is more than simple trolling on Fillion’s part. However, given Nathan Fillion’s reputation as a social media comedian, it would be best to keep your enthusiasm in check.

Nathan Fillion & James Gunn Excited For The Possibility of Adding Wonder Man To Guardians

Recently we have learned that Nathan Fillion, star of the cult television series Firefly and the film Serenity, has joined the cast of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events for its second season. In the past Fillion has appeared in many comic book films as a voice actor. He is mostly known for voicing Hal Jordan in some of DC's animated films like Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox and Justice League: Doom. He has one live action comic book role in Guardians of the Galaxy, in the form of an unnamed Kyln prisoner that Groot take easily takes out.

He recently had a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which unfortunately got cut. In the same way we saw a Batman poster during Man of Steel, Fillion's cameo, or easter egg if you want to call it that instead, »

The Court -- Wow, the acting leader of The Court doesn’t deal well with those who fail him.  At the beginning of the episode he orders the Talons to slit the throats of the current Court members due to killing Thomas and Martha Wayne in his absence.  Why does he care so much about the Wayne’s, and why would he destroy his own Court? The answer is that he never really served The Court, but the actual group he is affiliated with (The League of Assassins?) used them for their overall goal. »

Ranked: The Alien and Predator Films

25 May 2017 6:44 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Alien: Covenant is the latest addition to the Alien franchise, but how does it stand up against the previous films? To find out, we rank em’ all (including the Predator films).

The Alien franchise has a long and winding history. From lengthy gestation periods between sequels, to lots of conflict between filmmakers and studios, to varying audience interest over the years - I’m amazed that they just haven’t given up yet. Despite all these challenges, the series has persevered for nearly 40 years and gained legions of fans. As of late, the Alien franchise is back in theaters with a prequel storyline being helmed by series originator, Ridley Scott. Predator will also soon be back in theaters with a new film in 2018.

So maybe the Alien and Predator franchises are only linked by a small easter egg in Predator 2, but two fanservice films in the 2000’s made it official. »

‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Mad Men,’ and 7 More TV Series That Should Never Be Made Into Films

23 May 2017 9:55 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Against all odds, good taste, and common sense, the “Baywatch” movie is washing up on multiplex shores this week. If it’s successful as anticipated, it will likely inspire a new wave of film producers hunting for TV IP. This is a plea to hold fire.

It can work, of course. “Firefly” fans long begged for a movie version of the short-lived Joss Whedon series and got one in “Serenity”; “Deadwood” aficionados are similarly holding out for a big screen version of the HBO series. “Sex and the City,” “Twin Peaks,” “The X-Files,” and “The Simpsons” have all taken a run at the feature-length route, with some very mixed results. And recent hits like “Fargo,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “Westworld” made the reverse jump from movie to series, while Justin Simien’s Sundance premiere “Dear White People” is now enjoying a healthy run as a Netflix series.

Uncharted Movie Gets Tom Holland as Young Nathan Drake

22 May 2017 8:44 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In somewhat surprising news, it has been announced today that the upcoming Uncharted movie will be slightly rebooted when it hits the big screen. The main character Nathan Drake is getting 'de-aged' quite a bit from what fans of the longstanding video game know. And the character will be played by Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland.

Uncharted is coming from Sony Pictures, home of Spider-Man. And they have been so impressed with their new Peter Parker that they're giving Tom Holland two franchises instead of one. This will surely come as disappointing news to some, who have long envisioned Firefly star Nathan Fillion in the Nathan Drake role. The character was also supposed to be played by Mark Wahlberg at one point.

The Uncharted movie is being redrafted as a prequel to the game series. It will still revolve around the treasure hunting action hero at the heart of the »

James Gunn Explains The Fully Story Behind Nathan Fillion’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Cameo

17 May 2017 12:53 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

For months, fans were excited to see Firefly star Nathan Fillion cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Though the actor had lent his voice to an alien in the first movie, this promised to be a more substantial role, as he was playing Simon Williams/Wonder Man. Unfortunately, however, when the sequel hit theatres, Fillion was nowhere in sight. So what gives?

Thankfully, director James Gunn has taken to Facebook today to explain “the full story” behind the cameo and just why it was eventually left on the cutting room floor. It’s a lengthy post, but well worth the read.

“As many of you know one of my best friends in the world is Nathan Fillion. Along with Michael Rooker and Gregg Henry he’s been in every movie I’ve directed – even as a monstrous, perverted voice in Guardians of the Galaxy. I didn’t have »

Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and the cut Nathan Fillion scene

David Crow May 18, 2017

James Gunn talks about why Nathan Fillion isn't in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and what his cut scene would've been.

Nathan Fillion and James Gunn have had a long history. Fillion was the star in the first film Gunn ever directed, the deliciously grotesque Slither. He also has appeared in every film since then, including as the voice of a digital prison punk in 2014’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. Yet he is nowhere to be seen in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, the box office-crushing Marvel Studios extravaganza.

Now James Gunn has taken to Facebook to come clean on why Fillion, a space opera icon in his own right after Firefly, was not boarded in the final version of Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. Once again, Gunn confirms that Fillion actually was going to play a relatively important bush league superhero from the Marvel comics universe, »

The Best One-Season Wonder TV Shows That Never Got Renewed — IndieWire Critics Survey

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)

Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider

There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch. »
