Own said today that the upcoming fifth season of documentary series Our America With Lisa Ling will be its last. The cancellation is a significant because of Our America‘s place in Own’s history. Premiering in February 2011, Our America was part of the network’s inaugural slate of unscripted series aimed at empowering women and helping them better their lives. It was the only show of the bunch not hosted by Winfrey to draw a sizable audience while Own was going through major growing pains and the only one to make it that far. The documentary series premiered in February 2011, just weeks after the launch of the channel that is a joint venture of Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications. The docu series hosted by journo Ling remained a staple even as Own has shifted its focus to more entertainment fare in primetime.
“Our America” has explored a range of substantive issues and controversies across the country. The final season will take an in-depth look at topics such as gun violence in Philadelphia, Adhd in American families, the largest foster care system in the country, criminal informants, the HIV epidemic in the African American community and the emotional story of a woman held captive for months.
