Leslie Uggams was originally hired to play both Sojourner Truth and Barbara Jordan but she objected to some of the language in Sojourner Truth's speeches, so Lynne Thigpen was hired to play Sojourner Truth instead. When Ms. Uggams was unable to pronounce some words in Barbara Jordan's speeches (she was unable to properly pronounce the word "hyperbole" in several takes), Jordan's scenes were reshot with Ms. Thigpen, and Ms. Uggams' footage was entirely unused.
