Lion-Girl was written and directed by Kurando Mitsutake based on characters created by famed manga author and artist Go-Nagai who also created Devilman, Cutie Honey and Mazinger Z among others and produced by Toei Video. If that sounds like a recipe for a whole lot of weirdness, then you’re right.
The film opens in a Tokyo bathhouse with several nude people staring at a young woman named Botan. After, she refuses to be scared by their threats, they begin to transform. They sprout horns and fangs, their faces become brightly coloured kabuki masks as they snarl in anger. A glowing tattoo appears on her back as she turns to face them.

The year that gave us Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Temple Of Doom also gave us these 20 underappreciated movies...
It's been said that 1984 was a vintage year for movies, and looking back, it's easy to see why. The likes of Ghostbusters and Gremlins served up comedy, action and the macabre in equal measure. James Cameron's The Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's star status and gave us one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the decade.
This was also the year where the Coen brothers made their screen debut with the stunning thriller Blood Simple, and when the Zucker brothers followed up Airplane! with the equally hilarious Top Secret! And we still haven't even mentioned Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the unexpectedly successful romantic comedy, Splash. Then there was Milos Forman's sumptuous period drama Amadeus, which...

Wonderfully, sweetly geeky, and full of charm, authentic humor, and the sort of goofy yet intriguing adventures that inspire kiddie curiosity in history and art and science. I’m “biast” (pro): love time-travel stories…
I’m “biast” (con): …but they’re often terrible
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
He’s the other bowtie wearing time traveler, but he predates even the original 1960s incarnation of Doctor Who. Mr. Peabody and his son, Sherman, first appeared in the late 1950s in segments on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, and in what one can only imagine is Hollywood desperation to find some previously unmined existing material –for the built-in name recognition, doncha know — they have finally gotten their own feature-length cartoon.
Fortunately for us, no one involved took the easy, lazy, way out of assuming that that built-in name recognition was enough, and they made us a movie that is wonderfully,...

Beguiling Japanese star of fringe theatre and popular television
The Japanese actor Eiji Kusuhara, who has died of cancer aged 63, played the sadistic Lieutenant Sato in the television series Tenko (1981-85), was one of the narrators on the cult show Banzai (2001) and appeared on stages across the UK and Europe in a variety of beguiling roles. He was one of the first professional Japanese actors active in London in the 1970s and enjoyed something of a monopoly on roles until he starred alongside a fellow countryman, Togo Igawa, in The Man Who Shot Christmas (1984). Eiji spent most of his adult life in Britain. He always seemed relieved to have left his home country but was also perplexed by British culture. A natural comedian, he thought he was a misfit and constructed an endlessly playful persona for himself.

LONDON -- RDF Media led the field at the 11th annual Indie Awards, picking up three of the 16 nods at a ceremony honoring Britain's independent production community. Members of indie trade group the Producers Association for Cinema and Television vote for the awards, which were presented here Wednesday night. London-based RDF, which is making Wife Swap for ABC and produces Junkyard Wars for TLC, was named Indie Pioneer for its successes in the United States. RDF also collected the factual gong for reality show Faking It, and the multichannel award for surreal Japanese-style betting show Banzai, which is being produced for the Fox Network. The nod for Indie of the Year went to 19 Television, co-producer of the British version of the Fremantle format American Idol (Pop Idol in the United Kingdom), cementing its reputation as one of the United Kingdom's leading youth-oriented production houses.
