This film embodies what most of the urban youth in America expect to see in a hip-hop film: Rampant images of sex, gutless intimidation and murder. This of course describes the film's first ten minutes. Looking past the obvious rap formula, the film tries to distance itself from other crime-based films, with no success. The performances are mediocre at best, with everyone resorting to the use the f and n words continuously for emphasis. They aren't all bad. Damon Dash and Jay-Z's characters gave more realism and comedic value to the film, as they didn't take themselves too seriously. The film itself does have a gritty feel to it, with some great cinematography. It does portray street life for what it is; violent and dangerous. the only thing this film could have done without was the constant barrage of Roc-A-Wear clothing that dominated every scene. No one seemed to wear anything else.
clearly one of the worst movies of the year.Another dumb, idiotic piece of manure disguising itself as entertainment.first off the acting is inane,a contrived plot, bennie seigel character complaining that he cant make any money so he turns to the so called lucrative world of drug dealing.(gee so much for job corp).the plot involves beans wiping out the competition and setting himself up as the next drug kingpin(original plot)the screen play is oscar material.this is just an excuse to be showcase excessive violence, misogyny and just pure unadulterated ignorance.if none of these characters didnt curse this could be a silent movie.i understand young african american filmmakers want to showcase their own films and we should try to support them however i beleive their should be an effort on their part to have some quality to them.if anyone beleives this film is an hour and a half public service announcement about the evils of drug dealing there are kidding themselves.i dont understand this constant love affair with portraying the underbelly of african american society.lets make it balanced.showcase some films that have more uplifting messages to them.
This movie is the definition of the most terrible movie ever made. I know
that everyone thinks a movie is bad when they don't like it - but trust
this movie is THE worst you'll ever see... if you see it that is.
and at most times, unneeded nudity, cursive language and racial slurs are
just the beginning. The acting is even worse and the plot is way too
predictable. Plus, did anyone who saw the movie understand a single word
what Jay-Z said? 'cause I sure didn't. Beanie Siegel should go back to
the unknown rapper that he is and stay that way.
Lions Gate has picked up a lot of rejected movies in the past, like Dogma, which turned out to be great, but this one really belongs where Beanie Siegel's acting comes from - the gutter.
I give this a 0 out of 10. I'd give it less but after seeing what happens to Beanie at the end, the movie ended the way it should have began and therefore a 0 is perfectly fine.
I recently viewed the bootleg of this film and i'm glad i only paid four bucks for it cuz that's all it was worth. The mediocre acting combined with a dull flat and very tired storyline left me disappointed but not angry. I expected it to be much more raw and engaging given the caliber of Beanie Sigel's work as a rapper i was always pleased to pick up anything from the rocafella record label becasue the music was very gritty and honest yet appealing to the masses of people who didn't necesarily listen to rap. Jay should not have marketed this release with his name on the poster leading his fans to believe that he was a main character in the film when he appeared in it for a short time. I'd hate to see people who are fans of his plop well earned dollars down to see him for such a short time. Dame Dash turns out a small performance and plays himself and Beans turns out a convincingly disturbing and passinate Gangster type who has dreams of running a drug empire by "eliminating competition" ( killing them all off!). But by the end i grew very tired of the New Jack City-esque story which was done in a much more tasteful and intellectual way by Peebles' in '91 than by the Rocafella click in 02'. Do your self a favor buy the bootleg watch it at your boys' house but donot pay money to see it in the theatre. Put that money towards Sigel's album "The Reason" a superior hip hop album that is the most solid release from such a young artist I've heard in many years. A far cry from the crap they put out with the sole intent of making money off of people not for the culture not for its capturing of the rawness of the streets which it was hyped up as.
My boy & I went to see this movie, and were extremely surprised. This movie should have been rated NC17 or X. The constant naked women and lesbianism made me extremely uncomfortable. We don't need to pay to see men callin women b---- and hos. That's real life, and sorry men, but yall don't need any encouragement. I hear enough of that on the streets from ignorant people. I would love to see a film that uplifts women for once. Tell me why all the men in the theatre were gapin at the mouth while all the women were freakin. I don't understand why someone would make a movie like that.
The movie is about a hustler named beans who -one- day decides to become
FULL of ambition to do one thing: take over the drug trafficking
The acting in this movie was pretty bad. Fortunately, the really simple plot was entertaining and the main actor was actually convincing. I would've definately liked to see Jay-Z act more and see if he has talent in that area... i don't really think it takes a genius to play some wannabe "godfather" which is probably shown 40 seconds COMBINED, he could've ACTUALLY been part of the plot. why is his name even on the top of the poster? Anyway, if you can't stand watching people who can't act: don't watch it... otherwise give the thugged out flick a shot.
I was surprised by this film. Saw it late night on BET. Was very
impressed with its intensity. Having lived in NYC during the early days
of crack and having had friends that grew up in the projects, the film
struck a chord.
The guy that plays 'Beanie' is intense in this film. Great performance in my opinion and I loved the tag line "Ya either get down or ya lay down and if ya lay down, y'r gonna stay down."
I was also impressed with some of the special effects. Pretty gritty in spots.
Although this is not a perfect film by any means, I do believe that it is worth viewing.
I have not seen the sequel.
i was expecting a stupid gangsta movie. but it was much different then i thought. it was great! the acting wasnt too bad especially considering that most of these actors/actresses were rappers or have never acted in their lives. Great movie good plot. Recomend it to any1 who likes the Rocafella Crew.
I can't determine how bad this movie was cuz it was pretty embarrassing.
There is nothing that would seem real in this movie and I was not
with the Boondock Saints rip-off in this. The damn script was nothin'
shootin' every 5 lines, it's like watchin' a fake war movie!! I was
heated I wasted an hour an a half of my life on this complete mishap of a
this was terrible and needs to be left alone, watch Paid In Full instead...

All this movie is is more wanna-be thug rappers who either didn't have the heart to be a thug in real life or were frequent crime victims before they got big, so they did the next best thing...play a thug in a movie. And what's worst is that not one person in the movie could act...NOT A SINGLE ONE. Hell, they are not even all that good as rappers. I strongly recommend that you avoid this movie at all costs. Now when it comes to movies,I'm the typical guy...I feel that a movie just isn't a movie without shooting, explosions and car chases. But only when it's called for. The majority of the violence was uncalled for. And to be honest, I found it offensive because it's just another long stereotypical drug dealing-woman hating-violent-don't give a damn about nothing or no one except money black male movie.
