Pleasant comedy/mystery

Overworked star newspaper reporter tries to get away to a seaside resort, but crosses paths with the daughter of a high government minister, who seems to be involved in crime.

A light look at Danish life at the time.

Blowup 1923
richardchatten6 February 2022
A cynically jaunty little yarn anticipates the plot of 'Blowup' played as farce. A tad overlong but full of quirky digressions like occasional asides to the audience in the intertitles and stop motion animation of two table decorations coming to life.

Everything's Murder!!
kidboots17 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A 1923 comedy mystery movie from Denmark. The titles were very satirical, I found myself laughing out loud - some of the jokes I didn't quite get until they were almost gone but it was because they were witty and the titles played around with some of the scenes.

Erik Brandt is an ace reporter with shot nerves because he has just apprehended a murderer - he's a wreck!! but back at his flat with the prospect of 2 weeks leave he looks out and thinks he sees another!! Worse is to come - now a jittery mess he visits the seaside and his friend introduces him to Joan - the prettiest girl on the beach and he recognises her as being the assailant. Williams, his policeman friend is working on another murder so Erik thinks he will help by bringing in Joan!! Of course by this time they have fallen in love with each other so Erik tries to protect her even to the extent of going to the police station and confessing himself!! All to no avail - Joan has committed a crime she feels she will never live down - but it's not murder!!

Gorm Schmidt was very good as the intrepid Erik and although his career only lasted until the end of the silents he was famous for his portrayal of David Copperfield. Olga Belajeff was the beauteous Joan and she was lovely. Again, another casualty of sound, she appeared in Italian, Danish and German movies.

"Nedbrudte Nerver" (1923) By A. W. Sandberg
FerdinandVonGalitzien11 March 2011
The intrepid police-reporter Herr Jimmie Brand ( Herr Gorm Schmidt ) works for the "Daily Wire". After three days of investigation he solves the case of the Vibeleje murder. However, this put Herr Brand in a terrible stressed condition and for this reason his boss decides to give him two weeks of vacation.

But it will be a restless sabbatical because Herr Brand will witness a strange crime in broad daylight in the Hill Park as he is looking through the window of his home. Of course, our intrepid reporter decides to solve such a mysterious crime.

The style and artistic film influences of Herr A. W. Sandberg made him probably the most "Americanized" among the Danish film directors. That's an aristocratic appreciation that can be verified in "Nedbrudte Nerver" ( The Hill Park Mystery - 1923), a fairly well made detective und comedy film in which the Danish director uses and plays with the elements that such kind of film needs.

The influences of "Nedbrudte Nerver" can be tracked back to early serial films as well as mystery and crime films. By mixing such film genres, Herr Sandberg, in a peculiar way, prevails with a special Danish sense of humor that certainly is full of witticism, irony and slander. Herr Sandberg creates a very peculiar and funny hero who's a stressed and earnest police-reporter that will try to solve any crime he faces.

As this Herr Graf said before, the film has all the ingredients that this peculiar film genre needs; that is to say, a mysterious and unresolved crime, an enigmatic woman and a lot of misunderstandings. Let's not forget to mention as an bonus the pretty Danish girls in bathing suits, some particularly Danish lovesick anatomy studies such as "you have such lovely eyes, especially the right one" or genuine Danish love proposals, as for an example, "I love you; you are not like any other. If others were like you, there would not be many others. I love you!".

Herr Sandberg handled very well these film elements in an effective way, achieving a very entertaining and funny work. It is certainly a film that is harmless and predictable but precisely due to the unpretentious atmosphere together with Herr Sandberg professional nature and resoluteness, "Nedbrudte Nerver" is an estimable and a very good example of the spirit of mystery film. It's one in which pure and simple entertainment is what matters over all and certainly this film fulfils such intentions.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must to keep secret some minor crimes of the aristocracy.

Sparkling comedy!
naillon-216 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this film. The acting is wonderful, the script is sharply written, the titles are hilarious, there are plenty of sight gags. A newspaper reporter who fancies himself as a detective becomes involved with a murder/mugging, a missing body, and the perpetrator of the crime, with whom he falls in love. Our hero and heroine aren't exactly your typical characters, and the plot works completely. The titles are in Danish and English, and the English titles go so far as too give the Danish characters typical English names. I saw it at a festival, where it received loud laughs and huge applause. We need this one to be available on DVD!
