Creeping back a little lighter than last time.
15 March 2009 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

Following the oft-adhered to rules of horror sequels, this follow-up to Victor Salva's original (and, once again, written and directed by Victor Salva) gives us a larger selection of potential victims, higher bodycount and slightly inferior movie.

It's the last day the Creeper has to feed and this time he happens to get lucky when he comes across a school bus full of teens heading through his favourite highway/feeding ground. Before you can say "The Birds" we are knee deep in chaos, incomplete corpses and references to the aforementioned movie along with many others (such as "The Thing", "Moby Dick", etc).

Like the first movie, this film almost shoots itself in the foot by having such a good opening sequence that it's hard to sit through the lull until things get interesting again. Once again it's worth remembering that this is a "creature feature", because you're getting even more of the things that many people disliked the first time around; the psychic moments, the strange qualities of the Creeper's physiology, the flat-out mix of horror and fun while the tension rises. Okay, so the tension doesn't actually keep rising as it did in the first movie but you do hold out some hope that at least SOME of the teens will survive, as unlikeable as many of them are.

Add Ray Wise, playing the traumatised father of an abducted child who is now out for vengeance, and that adds at least one point to the score because he's always good value for genre fans and provides some quality once again amongst a cast of otherwise disposable faces (although Diane Delano is also good to watch, but sadly not on screen long enough, as the bus driver).

If you liked the first movie then you should like this one too. If you hated the first movie after the first 15-25 minutes then approach this likeably daffy sequel with trepidation.

See this if you like: The Birds, The Thing, Jeepers Creepers.
