Good idea but too few laughs
14 June 2004 | by (Australia) – See all my reviews

When I saw the trailer for this film I really thought it looked like a great Australian comedy. Unfortunately every decent joke in the movie was in the trailer. What's left is a collection of obvious puns (the town's name is Givens Head, for crying out loud) and a bunch of talented comedians looking out of place. The obvious problem is the script, which lacks the comic punch needed. The few genuine laughs, such as at Shaun Micallef's hilarious TV election ad, are far too rare. This could have been a very clever and funny movie with some Yes Minister touches, but instead just plods along towards an ending that was never really in doubt. A good concept, let down by poor execution.
