Storyline

When the excavation at a construction site unearths a skeleton, Det. Supt. Dalziel and DI Pascoe have a murder to solve. The construction is at an abandoned coal mine that was the site of a major incident during the coal miner's strike in 1984. It also brings back memories for Andy who had been posted there early in his career. It also brings him into contact with his his sister, Harriet Clifford, from whom he has been estranged for several years. Many in the community know Andy and his return is anything but welcome. The skeletal remains are identified as those of George Briley, a police constable whose head had been bashed in some 15 to 20 years ago. Briley was working undercover during the strike but the police subsequently learned he was bent as well, having stolen, so it was believed, as large sum of the strikers' money. Peter Pascoe receives information that suggests Andy may have benefited in some way as well. Written by garykmcd

True Northern grit.

A group of protesters break in on a dig site in industrial Thirksby, where an accident unearths a skeleton. Peter is thinking of a transfer, naturally Andy is upset. Andy visits his estranged sister Harriet, who gives him a very cool welcome. The body is identified as an ex Police Officer, George Brierley. Andy has to deal with local hatred towards the Police, as well as personal, family problems to unmask a case full of intrigue and mystery.

Stories like this were the reason I loved Dalziel and Pascoe so much, truly gritty. Watching it today it still feels surprisingly fresh, there was something about dramas from the early 2000's, mix of quality acting, production values and a hard, gritty edge that doesn't exist in mainstream nowadays.

Warren Clarke and Anne Reid show just how brilliant they are, bouncing fantastically off one another with true hatred and deep rooted loathing, outstanding performances.

Great episode, the art of storytelling.
