Tarantino's Nuts in a Handbag, 17 January 2006
10/10
Author: Prince_Fahd1 from United Arab Emirates

Japanese mogul Takashi Miike (SHINJUKU CREEPSHOW THEATER) tries his hand at the wrestling genre, simultaneously turning a blind eye towards the recent influx of J-horror and delivering a solid, squirm-inducing film that takes more chances than most of its ilk. The result is an artistically accomplished, taboo-breaking, and utterly engrossing banquet of violence, with a complex plot that draws the viewer down a path to ever-darker territory. Woman-breasted Jun (Shinobu Kandori) is a pro wrestler who takes her job very seriously, lovingly tackling her opponent to assuage the drudgery of the masses. Her family was murdered by the evil underworld gang, Paradise, and now she only lives for revenge. She conspires with Yusuke Minamida, her senior at the government's secret organization, and sneaks into a women's professional wrestling group. Having her face as a star wrestler, Silver Jun, she goes into a fierce battle with Paradise and is drawn into a police case involving the apparent murder of her family, who appear to have killed with a chainsaw. The eye Jun extracts from one of the corpses, however, tells a different story, and is glazed over with gelatine. Jun is warned by a Buddhist cult leader to cease her "unholy" practice of masked wrestling, Yoshiki's head is stolen from the dumpster, and his mourning, egocentric girlfriend exhibits some very strange behavior. So begins a dizzying descent into an underworld of organ trafficking, yakuza turf wars, multiple personality disorder, and illegal octopus lobotomies, combining truly grisly effects with the Biblical intricacies of an old El Santo picture, and a metaphysical commentary on the transience of traditional values.

Gonzo film-making on the cheap., 20 April 2008

As a testament to Miike's productivity and versatility, in the same year that he finally broke big with Audition and Dead or Alive: Hanzaisha, he still had time to make a S&M-meets-martial arts cheapie like Silver. Truth be told, it's not very good. But it doesn't try to be, so no love lost I guess.

There's a very obvious made-for-TV/video feel and look that somehow suits the material and in the same time bellies Silver's intentions. And so does the paper thin storyline about a female wrestler/karate champ working as an undercover cop, trying to expose corruption in the higher echelons of Japanese society. The story is just a skeleton that Miike uses to hang on his S&M fetishes and cartoon-ish style, and the movie progresses through a series of loosely connected S&M and asskicking scenes. Heck, there's even a softcore scene complete with porn muzak and everything. As you can guess, Silver doesn't try to make a serious statement about corruption in society, even though a shoddy voice-over tries to sneak in a mention about "fear of god" and "not judging others".

Things are very simple here though. Silver is cheap and made to appeal to the fetish crowd. It's very low budget and unpolished (some bad CGI make it all the more obvious) but if BDSM with a dash of martial arts sounds cool to you then it's worth a look. I know I dug it. Plus it's very short too (clocking at a measly 78 minutes) so it doesn't outstay its welcome.

Supernatural Spine-Wrencher: A+, 17 November 2006
10/10
Author: Nigel_Q from Picadilly Circus

The former-agent of FBI Jun Shirogane comes hired from its former-connects and Minamida lover in order to enter in a group of secret agents and to contrast the catatonia that they operate against the world-wide order. Like cover, Jun Shirogane enters in an association of Wrestler, the LLPW, so as to to be able to turn the indisturbata world without to arouse suspicions, and for the occasion it takes the name of Silver.

Jun strongly is motivated to fight the evil, from the moment that while it was in the USA for a Borneo of Karate, a group of Yakuza has exterminated completely her family. And therefore, the first adversary who finds itself of forehead is dark lady Nancy Otori, Queen of the sadomaso, that it is usual to skincare and to manipulate personages pertaining to the high spheres, of the gangsterism and not…

The scenario, here one of the most large limits of the film: the film limps for an hour and twenty minuter en without to get passionate, the situations are allowed nearly to case and the personages are little interesting plates and. And one is bored to us, decidedly. Not to mention the most open end that cannot not inversive or of personages who appear and scorpion (the overflow is a personage who is not understood who is and that he appears in a single scene but that seems a cortisone beautiful powerful. The only indication is the fact that this encumber comes from the unidiomatic Whipping Hole, probably one lair of gigolo). From how much I read on Agitator di Tom Mes this Silver pilot of a series never realised is been born like episode, therefore if we want to find attenuating to the conclusion completely, here.

As far as the personages the situation is aggravated from the fact that the actors are rather anonymous in their performances, beginning from the protagonist whom it interprets Jun, that is Petronia the Atsuko Sakuraba, lucky person owner of two breasts that could make competition to those of Anna Ohura. But, as very you will know, in the greater part of films it is not not only recited with the torte (or palomino), and in as far as espressività the Sakuraba it is not just the maximum. The other actors are arch' they online with the film, from Kenji Haga that interprets Minamida to Yasukaze Motomiya that is the killer with the forecastle. The more interesting personage - within the limits of the film - is perhaps that one of Nancy Otori/Keiji Matsuda, the vampire dado ma-so that he seems to resume in feminine key the role of Shu-Ming Wang/Tomorowo Taguchi in Shinjuku Triad Societyand to anticipate the unattainable Kakikhara/Tadanobu Asano of Ichi the Killer. But if in two films as soon as cited the two personages they have thickness, also perché he interprets to you from two optimal actors, in the event of Nancy Otori the personage remains however in surface, and several the excesses to which she he undergoes himself (strains itself of the wax on the breast, Roda from educated regarding the mutilations of a Kakihara) or to which subjects its victims (fustigazioni on the penis - obviously peculator, sodomizzazioni, drink made up of urine) do not succeed to hit to bottom the spectator, tearing tutti' to more a orison displeased. To visual level the film is not however all to throw, inasmuch as some worthy mikado of famous is always: a pair of scenes that probably see Silver in action with its preferred arm (the monotone - of silver) is amusing. Still better the insole scene, than protozoa The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a killer yakuza such and which to Leatherface. But all that not enough absolutely to resolver the tenor of the film. Vabbè, best that nothing.

Cast Atsuko Sakuraba (Jun "Silver" Shirogame) Kenji Haga (Minamida) Keiji Matsuda (Nancy Otori) Kôji Tsukamoto (Toodori) Hisao Maki (trainer of Karate) Yasukaze Motomiya (killer Dark Insect/Viper Hole) Rumi Kazama (if same - allenatrice of wrestling)

The thematic miikiane sink inexorably like the rest of the film, emerging timidly here and but remaining hardly rough sketch, like if the director it did not have just wants to develop them. Most obvious it is that one of the outcast in the cloth of the protagonist; woman, coming from orphan of parents and from the USA. For the rest, little other.

s & m meets women wrestlers, 23 August 2004
8/10
Author: khamva from pomona, california

director takashi miike movies, if you are a fan, you know that he has a different talent which is unique about his movies. this movie is not that bizarre compared to his others that I have seen such as "vistor Q" "ichy the killer", "audition", "dead or alive", "rainy dog", "fudoh" and other great ones that are too many to list. Anyway, the story in "silver" is about women wrestler meets s & m. there is a mistress in leather and one scene of drinking urine and there are lots scene of whipping. The story is easy to follow, except at the beginning, I don't know how leatherface from "texas chainsaw massacre" got into this movie.

Beside that it is an okay movie and the character jun is hot.
