Clarence Snuggles, a would-be poet, goes to the editorial sanctum of a daily, where he begins reading his poetry to Gregg, the editor. He is thrown out, but returns immediately and Gregg, seeing that he has at least persistence, decides to give him a try-out. He is assigned to cover police news. In the reporters' room Clarence reads some of his poetry, written in favor of the staff. The reporters tolerate him for a while, but getting tired of it, they plan to send him out on a fake assignment. They get the captain of a neighboring police station to call up the office at a certain time and tell him a fake story. Clarence answers the telephone call and is informed that a kite factory is on fire. He goes out and rushes up and down the street, but can find no fire. As he is entering a jewelry store to call up his office, he hears news of a great diamond robbery. After getting all the "dope" he calls up Gregg, gives him the facts and a special extra is soon out. Thus be puts one over on his fellow dopsters.
