This Is Us Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Welcome to the Family

20 September 2016 9:01 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

By now, America should be starving for shows like This Is Us.

As we find out on This Is Us Season 1 Episode 1, it's a drama about family. They have their issues and we're introduced to them one by one in such a way that even though we don't know the entirety of the family dynamic, we want to know more. At least I do.

The characters are interesting and well fleshed out in a very limited period of time. There are some exceptions, of course, but there is only so much you can do in 40 minutes. And that "hook" at the end? Well, don't read on if you haven't seen it yet, because we're talking about it here. You've been warned.

Unless it's a comedy, however, American audiences don't much care for emotion and light. We've somehow fallen into situation where dark is good, whether it's the material or the actual lighting. »

Remembering Michael Cimino, Dead at 77

It had been a long time since I was in the same room with director Michael Cimino. My first job out of Nyu Cinema Studies was in the publicity department at United Artists in New York, where I witnessed the long delays on Cimino’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning 1978 anti-war diatribe “The Deer Hunter,” the period western “Heaven’s Gate.”

The director got caught up in chasing authenticity in the myriad details of the production, training for weeks the cast led by Kris Kristofferson and Isabelle Huppert to roller-skate for one scene — and demanding endless retakes until he shot more feet of film, over 1 million, than even Francis Coppola did on another memorably out-of-control UA movie, “Apocalypse Now.” The original $11 million budget bloated to $32 million (Cimino’s figure), as recounted in Steven Bach’s “Final Cut: Art, Money and Ego in the Making of ‘Heaven’s Gate.’

Michael Strahan on ‘Live with Kelly and Michael’ Final Show: ‘It’s Bittersweet’

13 May 2016 6:16 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan were all smiles and hugging on Friday at the start of Strahan’s final outing as co-host of “Live with Kelly and Michael.”

The pair spoke briefly about Strahan’s departure after nearly four years on “Live” for a permanent slot on “Good Morning America.” Strahan said showed some emotion but also sought to downplay the melodrama of the situation that was magnified by Ripa’s angry response to having been kept in the dark about the decision to shift Strahan until moments before the news was made public.

“It’s bittersweet,” Strahan said. “This is a moment I didn’t anticipate being here. (But) it’s here we’re going to enjoy it. I’m not dying. I’m still in the family. I’m still available to come back if I’m ever called to co host….I’m not going anywhere.”

Jenni Konner on Her ‘Girls’ Directing Debut, the ‘Taxi Driver’-Inspired Last Shot

18 April 2016 5:19 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Sunday night’s season five finale of “Girls” confirmed two already widely suspected truths: that Lena Dunham is an artistic prodigy who is able to convey and compartmentalize the nuance and angst of womanhood better than most writers and television series creators twice her age, and Jenni Konner, executive producer and writer of “Girls” and Dunham’s partner since the show’s creation, has now officially emerged as a heavily skilled director.

For Konner, who had zero directing experience prior to taking the reins on Sunday’s episode, ironically titled “I Love You Baby,” the impulse to add to her resume of producing and writing duties stemmed from being surrounded by the ever-inspiring and always supporting “Girls” cast and crew.

“I had been sitting next to the most talented people in the world for five years and watching them do their job and I really wanted an opportunity to direct the show before it ended, »
